I have a conflicting awards problem. I was varsity for cross country during my sophomore year, but I also received the junior varsity MVP title. I ran JV for most of the races, but I was an alternate for CIF, so I made varsity.

How do I deal with this on college apps? I don't want adcoms to think I'm lying.

Explanation in the Additional Information ought to do it. No sweat.

^Thanks for the response :)

Unless you’re a recruited athlete they don’t care whether youu played JV or varsity. The leadership position may register though.

^Is MVP considered a leadership position?

Nope that sounds like an award.

What, why would they not care about Varsity vs JV? There’s a difference in time commitment, skill obviously, how would they not cAre at all?

At many schools, JV and Varsity cross-country runners train together daily and most of the meets are the same. So, they are getting on the same buses. So, the time commitment difference is too small to be any concern to anyone.

By itself, no college gives a darn whether you were on JV or Varsity. They only care if you are nationally ranked or have placed well in regional/state competitions. So, if you are the top runner on your high school varsity team but no regional honors they aren’t going to care. There are just too many other candidates in a higher category for them to care. The only exception is a really good student applying to a high ranking (academically) Division III school. They might be glad to have a cross-country kid that’s pretty good but not regionally worthy.
