Conflicting FAFSA deadlines

Hi all. Advice needed. D is in her 3rd year at a private univ. Her updated FAFSA is due every year on 4/15.

S, currently a HS senior, will be attending a private univ which requires the FAFSA (but not the CSS). Their deadline for first year filing is 2/1. I am assuming that I will NOT have my tax returns completed by the 2/1 deadline, so will most likely use estimated info for S's FAFSA.

My question is...I am planning to use actual info for D's FAFSA, since it is due later and will be available. Do you think there are any issues with the two filings being different? Or will I need to update S's filing with actuals once complete?

I plan to call S's school at some point but know that someone here must have some advice!

You will have to update your sons once it is complete. When you file it with estimates you will indicate that you “will file” your tax return. Once you actually file you will need to got back and update this and put actual numbers in. (though apparently there is some new way of accessing your tax data direct from the IRS website. Don’t know how that works with the estimating/updating route).

Not an issue at all…when DD was an entering freshman, her FAFSA (and Profile) were due very early…in fact her Profile was done in October for two EA schools…FAFSA done in early January. Her brother was a college senior and his financial aid renewal date was much later…I have to say…March (and because our "circumstances changed with little sis in school we did both FAFSA and Profile for both that year).

We filed DD’s Profile in October…FAFSA in early January.

We did our taxes ASAP after Feb 1…updated DD’s FAFSA and Profile and then completed DS’s using the correct info from the tax returns.

I knew I could count on you!

Will I then have to notify DS’s school that FAFSA is updated?

Also - thumper, you had to re-do the CSS for DS’s school? Hmmmm…I never thought of that. DS’s school doesn’t require it but DD’s did for her first year (not after that). I had hoped that I was done with that forever! Yes, circumstances are certainly changing. I’ll have to look into that one.

When you change it, it will be sent to the school (as long as the school is still listed on the FAFSA of course).
