Confused about ACT score. possible error?

Well, I got my ACT score report online a while ago, and I was just looking at it more in depth today and I was a little confused. I found that my subscores within each section didn't really correlate with my actual score for the section.
For example:
Both my Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills Subscores were 18 (out of 18), and yet, my section score was a 35 in English and not a 36.
And, my Combined English/Writing score was only a 35 even with a 12 essay and the 35 from the English section (which, as explained above, might not even be correct by itself).

Is there a reason for this? Can someone elaborate on how they arrive at the section scores from the subscores of those sections?

“Both my Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills Subscores were 18 (out of 18), and yet, my section score was a 35 in English and not a 36.”

This is not an uncommon occurrence. The subsections unfortunately do not have to add up to the overall section score.

As far as your combined English/writing: (1) that score doesn’t really matter anyway and (2) the curve may have been set so that in order to get a 36, you would have needed to get a 36 and a 12.

Thanks Peytoncline, that’s all I was confused about.
