Confused about ACT writing

Hey everyone, so I have decided that I want to switch from the SAT juggernaut (only got 2220) to the ACT, on which I can hopefully get a 35+. I took my first practice test and received 32 English, 35 Math, 36 Reading, and 36 Science, for a 35 Composite score. However, I'm pretty confused about how, if at all, the essay factors into the composite score. Does it somehow combine with the english section to form an English/Writing combined score? Thanks so much for your help, and I'm sorry my question is so basic :(

The essay does not affect the composite score. It does combine with the English score to form a English/Writing score.

so, if i had gotten a 36 on English and, say, an 8 on the writing to receive something along the lines of a 33 English/Writing combined score, would that be the final English score calculated along with the math, science, and reading to average the composite? I’m sorry if my wording is a little awkward, but i hope you understand the gist of my question.

No, the English/Writing score has no effect on the composite score. The essay score does not affect the overall composite score in any way.

I also have a question. If you dont take the writing portion, will ivy league schools hesitate when looking at your score (AKA they prefer to have the writing section).

^ I believe that most schools require that you take it with the Writing section, meaning that they won’t even consider your score otherwise. Check their Web sites, though.
