Confused about an Outside scholarship

My d received a $2000 scholarship from a local organization for her community service. To my surprise, the check was made out to her. I had assumed it would be made out to the college & informed the college she would be getting this money.

My question is since the organization did not indicate that the money must be used toward tuition, am I supposed to apply this scholarship toward tuition or can I use it to purchase a computer for college? Did I basically mess up by telling the college about this $$ or was this something I was supposed to do. Will the college readjust her package if I let them know it was not a tuition scholarship?

I am new at this so please excuse my naivet

I think I just found the answer to my questions - Yes, I am required to report the scholarship to the school:

FinAid | Scholarships | Outside Scholarship Policies

Yes, you are required to report it. How it actually changes your aid package varies depending on the college. Call or email the financial aid office & ask how it specifically impacts your child's award.
