hi, i am extrememly confused about what type of art college i should apply to.
i originally planned on applying for the major of Illustration.
however, i soon realized my interest in advertisement.
but from what i have heard, illustration is a very broad field and it includes the field of advertisement as well.
so i would like to know is it better for me to enroll in Illustration or Advertisement as a major if i want to be an advertisement designer in the future?
and what kind of portfolio should i submitt???
do they expect a professional advertising portfolio or just a regular fine art or whatever portfolio??
it would be great if u could answer my question and help me out
thanks a lot! =]

Can you provide a little more information about what exactly you mean by "advertisement" and what you want to do? There are lots of related college majors -- some lean more towards the artistic side (illustration, graphic design) and others are more general or elan towards the business side (marketing, communications). Have you looked at any specific schools yet to see what majors they offer and what courses are required for each? That might help focus your thoughts.

thx 4 the reply =]
i originally planned on applying for Illustration in RISD, and if i did not get accpeted, i will probabily go to Pratt or SAIC.
so i am on the illustration or artistic side a bit more.
but so many people have been telling me different things.
one of the professor recommended me to apply for liberal art school for under grad, and art school for grad.
however, some other grad students told me to only apply for liberal art school having business as my minor.
etc.
But i really do not know what major i should apply for if i want to be an advertisement designer. Pratt and FIT professors told me Illustration is a great major since it is so broad and maybe a little vague. yet i am afraid that i would be too much on the fine art side if i do enroll in Illustration.
any suggestion??

If you truly know that you want to go into the design side of advertising and have the talent/background, then the art school approach (majoring in illustration at a school like RISD or Pratt) is probably the best way to go. Quite frankly, studio art majors at even the best liberal arts schools won't give you the broad and deep experience that an art school would.

On the other hand, attending a liberal arts school/university where you can explore many different majors and take a variety of classes (including business, for exmaple) would be a much better approach if you are not totally certain of what you really want to do.

thank you so much! =]
