Confused about ASE and transfer credit

I plan on skipping (if MIT allows) 18.01, 18.02, and 18.06. I think I'm ok with 18.01 because of my AP scores.
If I want to skip 18.02 or 18.06, do I need to send transfer credit material AND take the ASE exams, or can I do one or the other?

i'm pretty sure if they approve the courses you took as equivalent, you only need to do that. if they don't you need to take the ASE for 18.02, 18.03 and 18.06, and you need to do problem sets for 18.03 and 18.06. I've heard those can be pretty substantial and can take awhile to finish.

Maybe someone who's done that can comment.

You need to either be awarded transfer credit or take the ASE, not both.

ok thanks
it seems like by the time they tell you that you have/have not received transfer credit it is pretty late, so maybe i should go ahead and ask for the psets now just in case

Yup, or if you're not awarded credit, you could do the psets and take the ASE at the end of IAP -- it will still be graded pass/no record.

actually, taking the ASE at the end of IAP makes it ABC-no record. if you're worried about ASE's and transfer credit, you should get your transfer credit materials in as soon as possible and start emailing if there's no response by late July. i remember that by the time they told me i wouldn't get credit for 18.03/18.06/8.01/8.02, it was already pretty much too late for me to prepare and do the hw in time (for 18.03/18.06)

so i just ended up retaking 18.03 and testing out of 18.06 at the end of IAP. no matter when you take ASEs, they don't count towards your GPA, but you can only take an ASE twice (once during no record, and another time later on should you not pass initially)

best of luck =)

According to the Academic Guide,
Pass/No Record grading for freshmen extends from first semester through IAP.
.
If that rule's not being followed, I'd definitely say something about it.

yea, but however, testing during January is at the END OF IAP, which apparently makes ASEs during IAP qualify for the ABC-no record of 2nd semester freshman year

i think the pass/no record thing refers to classes students can take during IAP for credit

oh, and biology ASE is only offered during the fall
