Confused about dorm availability

Is it true that sophomores and junior don't have guaranteed housing?
Or do you remain a resident in you freshman college for four years?

Thanks for helping me out --

You should do a search on this topic. I know there have been a lot of posts that have discussed this.

I tried to access these messages through "search"
and failed miserably. Would someone be nice enough to
just give a couple of highlights -- or kindly provide a link.

Thanks --

I did a quick search for "guaranteed" in the Rice forums and what do you know... 27 results!

And [url=<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=131043&highlight=guaranteed%5Dhere's%5B/url">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=131043&highlight=guaranteed]here's[/url</a>] another.

Searching is a good first option, but if everyone searched for answers instead of asking them here, CC would be virtually empty.

Rice guarantees housing for three of the four years, meaning you will likely be living off campus one of the four years. Usually, it is your second or third year (it depends on the college). The way you asked one of the questions, however, makes it seem like you are unsure about how colleges work. You are part of one college for all four years. When you go off campus, you are still part of the college, just not living there on campus.

Currently (as in before the new colleges are finished, starting in fall of '09), you are not guaranteed on-campus housing for all four years. Usually you will get housing for three years and be bumped off campus one year, but some people want to live OC more than one year and select others who want to stay on campus all four years are able to, depending on the luck of te draw. Athletes and college cabinet members are guaranteed on-campus housing.

Hanszen, Wiess, and Baker bump rising sophomores if needed.
Brown, Martel, Sid Rich, Lovett, and Will Rice (?) bump rising juniors.
Jones bumps rising seniors if needed.

I really appreciate all the kind people
who explained how the housing process works.
Thanks for your patience and info.

I think Lovett bumps rising sophomores...at least they did two years ago. There is a lot of housing available near campus. Check the offcampus online housing guide for some choices; also the print offcampus guide, which includes the large apartment complexes closest to campus.

That's correct, Lovett does bump sophomores. However, no one has been bumped off the past 2 years.
While you aren't guaranteed housing all 4 years, there's a good chance that you would be able to live on campus all 4 years. This past year 3 or 4 colleges didn't bump anyone off campus or bumped only single digits. Weiss tends to be the only college that bumps almost an entire class off. I'm not sure how the effects of an increase in student body and the construction of new colleges will effect that though.
So a lot of it depends on which college you get put in and on luck.

It's kind of random though. My freshman year, Hanszen only bumped off 4 people (our group of 4 who wanted a quad). But this last year, a ton of freshman were kicked off. At the same time, one of the north colleges actually had beds left over on campus.

Weiss did bump people off campus this year, but once the dust settled a large percentage of those bumped were then offered the chance to stay on.

Misterme; was it freshman who were kicked off for their sophomore year? Or freshman who were kicked offcampus their freshman year? I understood that freshman were guaranteed housing oncampus if they wanted it...

Hey anxiousmom! Freshman are indeed guaranteed housing. I think Misterme meant rising sophomores.

Yea, I meant people were kicked off for their sophomore years. Room draw is done during the the previous year (so sophomores are still freshman).
