Confused about Early Action/Decision?

If you get deferred from EA/ED you know how your application from EA/ED gets compared with the others with Regular Decision. When you get deferred, do you still need to write the college admission essays?

Like do you have to submit regular applications from Regular Decision along with the essay?

Also if you get deferred, can you resend your GPA if their scores go up? Like I searched the forum, and I heard you can resend SAT/ACT score if they improve, but I don't know about GPA.

And is it better to just do a Regular Decision instead of EA/ED, if your scores aren't that good compare to your final grades (like end of first semester)?

Also, do colleges count 1st semester of senior year for EA/ED? or only end of junior year?

When you get deferred, do you still need to write the college admission essays?
*Not usually. Most of the time, your whole application moves to the deferred pile, including your college essays/grades/scores/recs/etc

Like do you have to submit regular applications from Regular Decision along with the essay?
*Nope, u don’t have to do a whole new app (usually)

Also if you get deferred, can you resend your GPA if their scores go up? Like I searched the forum, and I heard you can resend SAT/ACT score if they improve, but I don’t know about GPA.
*Colleges require a Mid-year report that will include your grades, whether they are in your favor or not. This is REQUIRED
*If you took an ACT/SAT and it improved and u want to send it in, it’s your responsibility to do that.

And is it better to just do a Regular Decision instead of EA/ED, if your scores aren’t that good compare to your final grades (like end of first semester)?
*It depends. Some schools that have EA will not reject anyone in their first round. So if you get deferred, you get a second chance which is good. Some reject though. Also, schools like Notre Dame basically say “we encourage u to apply EA if u wanna know early” while others say “apply EA if and only if u think we are ur top choice”

Also, do colleges count 1st semester of senior year for EA/ED? or only end of junior year?
*for EA/ED, up till the end of junior year. but you still will have to send in your midterm and final grades of senior year either way.

Thank you for the reply coolapple1.
will the college use the Mid-year report for admission factor?

Should you be deferred, you should show continued interest. You have your mid-year reports and any relevant documentation (like prizes, awards, like you are the valedictorian)sent. You should call and write the admissions officer to let them know that you are still very interested (without being obnoxious).

They’ll always use ur midterm and final grades for admission, whether directly or indirectly.
If you get in EA, they’ll use them to make sure there aren’t any significant declines in your grades (indirect)
If you don’t get in EA, they will use them for admission directly.

Thx alot coolapple1! and akebias!

Actually, whether mid-year grades will be used or not after being deferred EA or ED depends on university. For regular admission, many colleges, including your high ranked private universities with EA or ED, do require that mid-year report that includes your first semester grades and the grades will be used to decide regular admission. However, many colleges, including most public universities, do not require mid-year reports, do not want them and base all admission decisions on grades through junior year. For example, UIUC has an early action program, and if deferred it tells you not to send any mid-year grades because they won’t be used to determine regular admission.

^thats good to know!
