Confused About Early Decision!

Hey all! So I am certain that UPenn is my top college choice, and I would like to apply early decision. My older brother, now a senior at Upenn, applied there early decision as well. My mom said, based on her knowledge from when my brother applied, that if I were to NOT get into UPenn ED, I would have to go to community college and transfer later because it would be too late to apply to other schools! I don't think this is true, but I just wanted to be safe. So if I did not get into a school ED, is that it for me? Can I apply to other schools?

You can apply to other schools with Regular Decision. If you are feeling diffident about your chances to get into UPenn, I would suggest finishing those apps sooner rather than later, and submitting them before the January deadline.

Good luck!

Your mother is wrong.

If you get rejected from Penn ED, then you’ll have that info in mid December – plenty of time to submit apps to other schools besides community college.

Your mother is WAY wrong.

Yes, your mom is wrong. You should certainly have a list of match and safety schools identified by now – if not, you need to do that right away. Then check their websites. Many have RD applications due sometime in January (although some want apps earlier if you are to be considered for scholarships). You can also go ahead and submit EA or RD applications while you wait to hear from your ED school. You just withdraw those other applications (call or email admissions at the other colleges) if you are accepted to your ED school AND you are sure the financial aid package is sufficient for you to attend. Don’t withdraw your other apps (or stop working on them if you have not submitted yet) until you see the FA package if you are applying for need based aid, though.

Thank you all for replying! I really appreciate it. Anyways, I’m glad my mom was wrong, this makes me feel much more confident about applying to UPenn ED.
