Okay so I want to apply for NYU but the cost is what is holding me back. Their average financial aid package is around $22,000 but does that mean 22,000 over 4 years or you would get 22,000 each semester?

It is 22,000 each year I believe. Either way you should apply to NYU and see what aid you will get. Some people here have been pleasantly surprised by the amount they recieved, others not so much. Bottom line is that you should apply and just see what they will give you.

what you are looking at is probably mean to show ‘per year’

But there are MANY factors that go into what $$ NYU will GIFT to you.

Run your EFC thru the collegeboard.com calculator using the federal method.

Expect to pay that much at the very least. If you are a TOP candidate and have a low EFC, you might lucky and get some good merit aid money.

If you see that your EFC is 40K, don’t expect much from NYU, IMO
OTOH, if you have an EFC of 0 and are not a TOP prospect, you probably can’t afford NYU even with full Pell grants, NY state grants, and stafford or federal loans.

my dad got laid off but my mom is still working and making around 100,000. how should the financial aid be then? below or around the avg?
and what if i applied early?

run your numbers using projected 2009 income (if your dad got severance $$ this year that counts) and you will have an idea of what your EFC is. NO one here can tell you what NYU will offer you. Do NOT be surprised to see your EFC is 25K with that kind of income (and assets figure in as well)

Actually, sueinphilly is not entirely correct. My EFC was more than tuition+room+board (how they figured that out, I have no idea), but I got nearly my entire tuition covered with a merit scholarship. Many of my friends in the same program came from similar financial backgrounds. You really just need to apply and see how you fare.

My efc was zero and I was not a top prospect for stern. On the estimated financial aide package, they said it would approximately give me 54k a year with loans, work study, etc. After my initial $800 deposit and $1000 housing deposit, I am still expected to pay 2k a semester. I got about 29k a semester according to my ebill, and charges came out to 31k a semester. This is not including books and cost of living, which is easily another 2k. So realistically, although my efc was 0, I am paying about 8k from my parents pocket. They aren’t too happy, but hopefully with a degree in finance I can make alot of money and pay everything off in 10 years before I go back and get my MBA. Don’t do ED, that was my biggest mistake, since I figured with an efc of 0 I would get great stuff. Their online publications are misleading. They say their total cost for the year is about 55k, but the actual bill comes out to about 62k per year, before you factor in personal expenses.

anorexic_abe- Wait, so NYU gave you 29,000 dollars a semester? Congrats! That is good!

Technically, yea. I mean it’s including work study and loans, but it’s Alot more than
Others

Oh wow. I am applying to NYU Abu Dhabi just so that I could match your FA for NYU Manhattan lol
