hi everyone, i got my financial aid package from nyu

scholarship: 21,720
workstudy: 3,000
perkins loan: 3,000
subsidized loan: 3,500
unsubsidized loan: 2000
plus loan: 17,372

Total: 49,992

I will be a commuter and i called nyu and they told me commuters only pay for the tuition (44,845, books & supplies 1000, and personal expenses which is around 500-600)

so when i add the tuition, books & supplies, and personal expenses i get LESS than 49,992 so doesnt that mean im paying for more even though i dont have to?

also on nyu albert, since i got the plus loan of 17,372, can i accept and take out a less amount like 15,000?

:p

I believe you can take out less, yes.

But remember that that PLUS loan a loan in your parents name - I’m not sure of your financial situation but can your parents afford to pay off such a large loan x4? Do they have very good credit? Because the PLUS loan is credit-based loan, meaning your parents will need to have good credit in order to actually get the loan. Additionally, as the years pass and their debt accumulates, it becomes more difficult to take out such large loans, especially if your parents do not have outstanding credit.

I would suggest talking to your parents and making sure they have the excellent credit required for you to be able to attend NYU all four years - if you decide to attend NYU and their credit is not good enough, you may be stuck half-way through your NYU degree, unable to pay tuition, and be forced to drop out.
