Confused about housing application??

I'm confused, my son signed the scholars interest form, and should he now sign up for housing? He has not decided 100% that he will attend UMD. We are waiting for financial aid statements. Generally, I would have thought you do not sign up for housing, unless you pay your admission deposit. Do you do the housing application, prior to admission deposit?

I believe that you can sign up for housing before committing, but then if you decide not to enroll you have to withdraw your housing request as well. Anyone wanna confirm this?

true…and you want to confirm housing as soon as possible…if your son does end up attending scholars, housing is established in the order of housing application date. He could possibly end up in a triple, even within the scholars program.

Even for one of those special honors living and learning arrangements, you still need to request housing separately? Thanks, that was off our radar completely.

Yes, you still need to get your name into the housing system, and get your priority for having your room assigned. Even if you know you’ll be in xyz dorm because of your program, you still need to reserve your spot there. In every program, there are people who end up commuting for one reason or another; they do not assume that you will be in university housing…your housing application form is your entry ticket.

Thanks for the replies…gonna sign up ASAP. I was just a little uncomfortable with the caveat at the bottom of the housing application, which reads, “You agree to pay all housing charges, blah blah blah, by signing this form.” After looking further, I see you can cancel your housing contract, prior to July 1. But you must remember to cancel the housing contract!

My older son went to JMU, would have been a lot easier for me if this guy went to JMU too! I already know their system!

They always keep you hopping!

So if I confirm housing, I dont have to confirm enrollment?

I’m not sure what you are asking, yodelo. Confirm housing now, and you DO STILL have to confirm enrollment by the May 1 deadline (I think that’s the date??). If you decide NOT to attend UMD, save yourself and others some hassle and individually notify the office of housing as well. One would think that the two would be linked, but from personal experience, we know it doesn’t always work that smoothly.

I just want to confirm housing right now. But I do NOT want to confirm enrollment, because I still have college I’m waiting to hear from

That’s exactly what you should do. By confirming housing now, you are not committing any $$ to actually confirming enrollment yet.

Reviving an old thread for when the decisions come out. DO NOT wait to apply for housing, especially if you are waiting for one of the April decisions from one of those “other” schools. Housing is assigned based on the date you apply FOR HOUSING. Avoid ending up in a triple by confirm housing now. IF you decide NOT to enroll at UMD, you should also (separately) tell housing you’re not coming. (The left hand does not always tell the right hand what’s going on at a place as big as UMD).

I called UMD, and they told me the form doesn’t mean anything. The lady told me not to fill it out yet.

As soon as “accept” decisions are posted, go ahead and apply for housing (For fall 2013)

Okay I will, as long as I get accepted. Thank you for your help
