Confused about how many essays we need to write

<p>Under the writing button on the Common App, there's a short answer and a personal essay that we have to do. Does this get turned in to all the colleges?</p>

<p>Also, on each of my 3 college's supplement page, there was another essay topic, which was more related to the school. Does this mean I write 4 essays total? Or is the supplement essay optional/able to replace the personal essay?</p>
