Hey guys I am planning on starting community college this summer as a freshman. My plan is to transfer to one of the uc's for a biology related major around fall 2015. I was looking online and was confused about IGETC. Most of the campuses say that igetc is not required and you should instead focus on the lower division classes related to your major. For anyone that has successfully transferred my questions are these.
1)is it hard to complete igetc along with all the lower division classes for a biology major?
2) if I don't do igetc at cc then won't I have to complete it making it harder to graduate in 2 years?
3) were you able to do igetc along with your bio related lower division courses?
4) is igetc required for the TAG program?
Thank you in advance!!

You should focus on the pre-reqs for your major as well as the GE requirements for the individual Bio programs you apply to. There is usually a lot of overlap between IGETC and their GE requirements, so its not a bad thing to complete it.

Personally, IGETC was easy to finish because I had 20 AP units but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it. The pre-reqs for Bio are time-consuming.

Thank you so much for responding! It makes a lot more sense now!

Yeah, to confirm what novalord2 said about prereqs… I can’t say how important it is that you pay attention to this. IGETC is very good road map to follow, but spend some time ensuring that you fulfill your prereqs. Assist.org doesn’t always cover these in a transparent fashion…
