I went and discussed my education plan with a community college counselor for the first time today, and I wanted to major in computer science. My counselor then enrolled me in Associate in Science for Computer Information Systems. My intended program was to complete my general education in community college, then I plan on transferring to a university to complete a Computer science degree. We did not discuss anything about a transfer program to a university, or a general education program. My question is, is my counselor and I on the same page, Is completing a associate degree, one of the process in transferring to a 4 year, or was it a misunderstanding in my intended educational plan.
Sounds like a misunderstanding. You need to go back and tell him that you plan to transfer to a 4 year university and you need to take your general courses.
An associates in computer science is NOT something you would do if you plan to go to a 4 year university. None of those classes will transfer and you would end up having to start a bachelors from the beginning. In fact, you don’t need a counselor anyway. You can take your college catalog and compare courses to the catalog at the university you want to go to. That’s how I did it. I just signed up for classes based on the university curriculum, then transferred over.
