I e-mailed FYS about this but they haven't answered yet and I'm worried that the longer I take to choose my classes, the less chance I have of getting the ones I want--does anyone know if this is the case or is it just random?

Anyway, what I don't understand really is the AP credit thing. According to the chart, since I have 5's on the AP Chem and AP Bio, it seems like I have enough credit to place out of science (which I really, really want to do because I hate it). But on the course selection form, what would I write under science? Online there is no "I have credit" option...am I completely misunderstanding how this works? I was so excited because I thought I never had to take science again but now I'm really worried haha.

I think that I remember that son left the spot blank for First Year Comp since he had the AP credit requirement for that. Maybe just leave it blank--but keep trying to get in touch with the FYS advisors. They are very helpful! Even with the AP credit, they may have you sign up for some other classes. Since son was able to place out of FYC, he moved on to his other Arts and Letters course requirements. Have you tried calling the FYS office? That might render you a much faster result.

Thanks, I will try calling. Do you know if classes are given on a first come, first serve basis? I saw that you can leave out the First Year Comp if you have the credit, but the science part is a little more confusing--maybe you do have to take one even if you have the credit and all the credit does is help you place into a higher level class. I'm really not sure. Thanks though.

Yes, I do think that the classes are first come, first serve. However, I seem to remember son saying that during that first week of classes, there is a lot of dropping and adding of classes. So, I would imagine that if you are not that happy with the schedule you first get, you can make some adjustment during the first few days.

if your not a science major (LIKE ME yayyy) and you have the credit you just put in another course. For example, i'm an intended business major, i already have my math and science requirements fulfilled so i won't have to take it! on the line where it says "math" or w/e... u just put another elective course... on the line where it says "science" you put another elective course... i e-mailed FYS and they told me this so you can trust it!

wait... some people said that this was like a wishlist, a basic outline of what your courses will be like...

is this really first come, first served basis where I have to submit this ASAP?
cuz i really would like to take time and think about what I want to do

OK, I did this all last summer and had a bunch of the same worries. Jvon is right about getting electives in place of requirements. I know that the form itself makes you feel bad about being ahead of the game. Don't worry about it. Your advisor will understand your desire to get a jump on language or college recs as soon as possible. This is the semester in which you have the least independence in picking classes, mainly because your advisor will be picking classes and times based on your choices and unfulfilled requirements. Springtime it becomes your game (and is consequently much more enjoyable). If you absolutely hate your schedule you can try to get your advisor to put you into different classes, but generally not into different sections of the same class (i.e. if you hear the prof sucks).

As for the rapidity of the situation, I would say that taking your time is a good idea, but do try to organize things as soon as is feasible. It gives your advisor more time to play with your schedule.

thanks for all the responses, the part that was confusing me is that on the online course selection form under science there is no option to indicate you have already fulfilled the requirement. however, FYS told me to try to leave it blank and if that doesn't work to just pick 2 topical sciences and my advisor will know i've fulfilled the requirement later. i am definitely not majoring in a science so i am very happy that i never have to take one again.
