Confused about priority wait list

I am confused about the "priority" wait list letter. My son received the fat letter which offered admission to some of CMU, wait list at CIT-ECE, denied SCS. I called CMU and was told there is only one wait list and to call back April 7 to find out more about the wait list. Now it sounds like some kids on this forum received a "priority" wait list letter in addition to the fat letter package.
What is going on? Anyone know?

yeah i want to know that for my friend as well...he seems to be confused...

i think they selectively give out priority waitlist, not too sure about this though. =x

the waitlist letter is worded very badly...i called the admissions office and I asked:

Me: Is everyone that is waitlisted offered a spot on the priority waitlist
Admissions: Pretty much, yeah

So priority waitlist IS offered to all students that are waitlisted

I AIM-ed the person and they said everyone was offered priority...

Hmm

In that case, if it's not legally binding, who Wouldn't opt for the PWL then?

Hrm, I thought it was binding?

I don't understand why some people received a letter for priority wait list and we did not when the acceptance letter included wait list for CIT-ECE (and accepted to some other areas of CIT).

This site may help:

Alan's Carnegie Mellon Page

I was waitlisted at the MCS and because I only applied to one school within CMU, I also received the option to remain on the priority wait list (the option I decided to choose because CMU is my first choice).

Any idea how many are in the priority waitlist for 2008 fall
