confused about richmond..

So richmond was always high on my list of schools, but as of late I'm kind of confused- does UR actually have separate "colleges", and therefore separate classes, for men and for women? and also separate dorms as well..?

No. Read about it on the website. Too much to write! But everything including classes and dorms are integrated. The two colleges represent Westhampton for women (they have their own student government) and Richmond for men (and they do as well). That is the only separation you’ll see on campus. Have you visited?

forz - Investor is correct. The colleges are a result of history. Richmond College was a men’s college. Early 20th century Westhampton College was formed for women. At one time the men were on one side of the lake and women on the other. Legend has it that Richmond had the best swimmers in the Virginia! Today, I think freshman dorms are the only thing segregated. If you can, visit! It is a beautiful campus with some great history.

Everyone who mentions the only thing that is “separate” is based in history is right.
But PAVenturer… the dorms are not separate. My D’s dorm, actually her floor, is completed mixed with males and females. She is very comfortable there. Her freshman dorm was all women, but this year is mixed. No big deal. Most schools have mixed dorms.

There are all female dorms, all male dorms, and mixed. You can put in preferences. Lora Robins (all female, freshman) is a really popular choice for girls. Some of the newer dorms are now co ed (Lakeview, for example) as well as some of the older dorms (Gray), etc.

Creative - that’s what I said: “I think freshman dorms are the only thing segregated”. My daughter happens to be home at the moment and I asked her if that was accurate. She said that Freshmen will be in single sex dorms. Beyond freshmen year there are options including single sex.
