Hey guys! I got an 8 on my Jan 2014 SAT essay, which was very unexpected because I usually got 11 on practice tests at other test centers. For the prompt about whether progress is a result of struggle I wrote about the French middle class struggle in the French Revolution and Rosa Parks' 1 yr long bus boycotts in Montgomery, Alabama. I'm so confused what I did wrong, I can post more of what I wrote if it helps. Should I have had 3 examples?

3 examples isn’t necessary. I only had 2 and managed to get a 10. Could you maybe post or pm me the essay?

There is no formula for writing a good essay, so dismiss any notion of a minimum requirement of examples. The graders aren’t just looking for examples; they’re also looking for how well you can develop those examples into your essay and critically think about the topic. I encourage you to read examples of essays scored as 4,5, and 6 if you have not already.

@allergictobs thanks! i’ve been trying my best. honestly, i feel there is a sense of luck involved on test day.
@danebrick i have sent you my essay and thanks for offering the help. much appreciated (:
