Confused about scholarship chances.

Hey guys,
Overt he past few weeks, I've just started to feel the heat from college acceptances and admissions as over 35 kids from my school were admitted either ED or EA to Ivy League schools. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to afford these well-known schools. However, i recently was accepted into the Penn State College of Engineering and The Swanson School of Engineering at Pittsburgh, both very highly acclaimed engineering schools, and still have yet to hear back from UVA, Cornell, Syracuse, Bucknell and Buffalo.

I was wondering if any of you guys knew if i would be automatically considered for Merit Scholarships at each school, or do i need to fill out another application? I don't plan on applying for any big-time scholarships, as i assume it is a giant waste of time, but i really would like to know if these schools offer automatic consideration.

Lastly, My scores are pretty high so i feel like a merit scholarship at each school is attainable.
SAT Combined: 1470 out of 1600 or 2150 out of 2400
GPA: 94.7
SAT MATH 1: 800 out of 800
SAT CHEMISTRY: 750 out of 800

Please reply, it would mean a lot to me and will hopefully put my mind to rest for awhile.
Thanks, I will appreciate any help.

If you need merit scholarships in order to attend college, then you need to QUICKLY apply where FOR SURE you’ll get enough merit…otherwise you may find no affordable schools.

PSU is AWFUL with merit. I highly doubt you’ll get a dime from them.

Pitt is very iffy with merit. Merit seems to go to those who apply EARLY. Their methods for awarding just can’t be predicted.

Cornell doesn’t give merit.

UVA’s merit is rare and not likely for your stats.

Your stats are very good, but unfortunately, they’re average for most of those schools in eng’g, so not likely going to get much/anything.

SAT II’s rarely matter for merit.

Right now, it’s too unknown for UPitt…you might get some, you might get none. You won’t get much/anything from PSU.

do not have the money to afford these well-known schools

How much merit do you need? In other words…how much will your parents pay?

YOU QUICKLY need to apply to some financial safety schools…I’m concerned that you won’t have any affordable schools based on your list.

Thank you for your feedback!!! I really appreciate the help. And i just applied to uconn and university of buffalo today for financial backups. The most my parents would probably spend is 20,000 a year

How are those back ups? Are you instate for either? Do you know FOR SURE how much merit you’d get at either school?

(You do realize that Buffalo’s weather is awful, right? )

GrayHen, are you a NY state resident? If so, this is a good list as long as you’re willing to attend Buffalo if the money doesn’t work out elsewhere. The instate COA of SUNY Buffalo is right around $20K. The student has the stats for merit but most kids who get merit at Buffalo also have need.

And the weather in Buffalo is probably no worse than Syracuse or Ithaca.

Syracuse does give merit but the average merit for students without need is only $9K-- not enough to get COA down to $20K.

What is your home state?

*SAT Critical reading:770
SAT Math:680
SAT Writing:680

Merit Scholar*

ARe you a NMSF?

Greyhen, where are you an instate resident? You have applied to public universities in PA, NY, CT, VA. It is impossible to be a resident of all four states.

The OOS publics will not be safety schools IF you cannot afford to attend. Only UVA meets full need for all accepted students. The rest do NOT. Do you HAVE financial need?

Also, if you can’t chance yourself, how in the world can you “chance back”? Just saying!

I took a quick look at the competitive full tuition/full ride listing and you meet the minimum qualifications at U Pitt, if you’re in the top 5% of your class. Perhaps you could make a call to admissions to inquire further about scholarships.

University of Pittsburgh
Name of Scholarship:University Academic
Value: up to Full Ride
Minimum Requirements: “In recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed a minimum SAT I score of 1450 (math and critical reading scores only) or 33 ACT composite score, an ‘A’ average, and a top 5% class rank”

DD from sunny San Diego went to SUNY Buffalo and indicated that midwestern weather was worse than Buffalo. During her 5 years in the engineering program, she maybe had 1 storm that closed classes for 1 day.

Apply to your in-state affordable schools really quickly!

Hey guys i appreciate the help and thumper1 i completely agree with you haha i am a resident of New York so i would be in state for cornell, buffalo, syracuse. and mom2collegekids i am not a NMSF unfortunately. and I’m positive that my family will need and has financial need.

SUNY Maritime is often overlooked for engineering. You may be too late. Stonybrook also. Sorry you are late in the game. With a high School like yours, you should have lots of options. Speak to Guidance when you return and ask this question. A High School doesn’t send 35 students to IVY league unless its top notch AND has a top notch guidance department.

You are only “instate” for certain programs at Cornell.

The SUNY system has quite a few schools. The instate total cost of attendance is modest compared to most public universities. You are fortunate to have those options.

In addition, if your family income is below a certain threshold, wouldn’t you be eligible for TAP?

NYS taxable income limit for dependent undergraduate students’ TAP is $80,000. See [Award Amounts and Income Limits](<a href=“NYS Higher Education Services Corporation - TAP Eligibility”>NYS Higher Education Services Corporation - TAP Eligibility)
