I'm just checking out colleges as a junior in high school. I'm really interested in art but don't want that to necessarily be my focus in college. If I didn't go to the School of the Arts could I still take a variety of art classes? How do the acceptance rates of the different schools compare?

It depends. If you go in Undecided you may be able to. Other than that it depends on how much room you have for electives. If you mean performing arts at Tisch though, the only classes you can take as a non-major are the Open Arts courses.

Take a look at the “forums” at nyu.edu. It answered a lot of questions for me. I don’t know about YOUR major. But you must apply to ONE school only. But there are MANY opportunities to take classes and even minor in another school. But some things are still verboten. Look at the website, then undergrad admissions (left side) , then “forums” at the top of the page. Lots of FAQ on each school in particular and admissions specifically. LOTS of these major/minor/which school questions.

Steinhardt and Tisch usually reserve what’s called “non-major” classes in each art discipline. so there would be, say, Photography, and there would be two classes, one for Studio Art majors ONLY and one for NON Studio Art majors.

so even if you didn’t apply to an art major, you could definitely still take art classes. my roomie is an Anthropology major and Studio Art minor. she’s taken sculpture, drawing, painting and photography.

^ this is true in theory, but in practice, classes like Intro to Ceramics, Painting I, etc, fill up right away - I got the second registration day this year, feeling sure I’d finally be able to get Painting or Ceramics for once, and it was filled up!

and I don’t have anymore electives from here on in, and there’s no way I’m paying $4k to take ceramics over the winter or summer when I could do it in my local CC for $200

i guess it depends on the artform. i didn’t have any problems with digital photography, and my roomie last year took sculpture. :-/ that sucks! i feel you, though. i wanted to take this certain Open Arts class for a few semesters, but they either offered it at terrible times or it got full. i’m taking another one that’s just as fun, but it still kind of sucks.
