Ok, ill try to make this as clear as possible. i'm applying to Amherst for transfer, and im currently working on their supplement. Now, no where does it explicitly stats "Why do you want to transfer to Amherst" or anything like that. The supplement essay prompt is just "respond to one of the following quotations". Should I do so, but also include how that relates to my desire to transfer to Amherst in that same essay? Or do i make a separate commonapp personal statement that is geared solely towards Amherst??

Thanks so much!

I see no reason to be so intent on writing a “why Amherst?” essay.

Use the prompts as they were intended without trying to skew them into being what you thought they should be.

If you want to make a separate CA version just for Amherst with a “Why Amherst?” essay as the main essay then that would be your choice. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Personally I am of the opinion that if Amherst wanted a “Why Amherst?” essay so much they would ask for one. Of the 4 schools I applied to transfer to with CA, only one had a “Why us?” essay in their supplement. I didn’t write one for the other 3.

You make a version of the CA for Amherst. In it, you modify your main essay to include some information on why Amherst is a great school for you. In the supplement you respond to the quote, as Amherst asks you to.
