Confused about transfer...

Ok so say in HS I got a bad GPA (2.9) and good SATs (2050). If I went to a state school for 1 or 2 years and got a 4.0 GPA there, would it be possible to transfer to a really good school? (like UCLA or BC or Georgetown)? Thanks.

Sure - it's possible. I would recommend 2 years (transfer as a junior) and work hard on specific EC's that will enhance the most interesting and passionate parts of your personality (esp. if they correlate with your major). When you do decided to transfer don't forget to let the school know why you want to go to their school SPECIFICALLY.

Good luck. Make good grades and have fun.

It is certainly possible. Meanwhile, if you do decide to transfer, make sure you come up with a range of schools of differing selectivity that you would like. Those schools you listed are very selective and, even if you do well, you might not get in. So find others, which have the same elements that appeal to you, but that accept 30-50% of transfer applicants, where your chances will be even better. If you won't be happy to stay at your state school, add a school or two for a safety, that accept 2/3 or more of transfer applicants.

Meanwhile, be sure to get to know a couple of profs well enough in your first two years that you can get good recommendations. That is an important part of the transfer apps to most schools.

Good luck.

nspeds transfered to Georgetown with something like a 2.9 hs GPA.

HEY TERRARUMORBIS, did u say someone got in w/ a 2.9, I did too...which isnt really that bad...I mean its just like a 3.0...right? but who is nspeds and when did he transfer???

He's a CC user...do a search for him. He's quite a prolific poster.

what college did he go to? and what were his college stats? LET ME KNOW, cause I'm applying and my GPA is 3.2 and is going up after this semester.soo.....PLEASE LET ME KNOW...ur awsome, thank YOU!!!

Getting a 4.0 in a state college after getting a 3.2 in high school? You need to be realistic because the odds of that happening are very small. In my stat class we did a regression analysis to predict college gpa. one of the determinants was hs gpa.

Out of the data set of just over a 1000 observations of california state school students, nobody had such a drastic increase.

TERRARUM, NSPEDS had a HS GPA OF 2.3 and got in to GU...WOW, do u remember his stats because I looked him up and he is not receiving any MSGS OR emails...PLEASE LET ME KNOW....btw: where do u go to school at???

TERRARUM, did he have good SAT OR ACT SCORE???? let me know PLEASE!!!

whoa there. are we a little antsy to know!!??? :)

Just a side comment of encouragement. I, like you did terribly in high school (something around a 2.9 as well, actually lower, I think). However, my first semester of college I achieved a 4.0 and as this semester ends im going into final week with my lowest grade being a 97. I go to a state school (nothing special). Getting a 4.0 after a bad high school performance is possible but it will require alot of work, be prepared to do the work if thats what you want.

YTA4: I don't know!! If you want to sift through all his posts I'm sure you can find the info...I don't know though, sorry! I'm at Colgate now, though I'm going to transfer for the fall.

nice grant! r u applying to colleges at this time?

I applied to only a couple because I still think my HS GPA will hold me back some (the more credits you get the less weight is put on HS work). I got rejected from Bowdoin so far (acceptance rate from was 3/200) Im waiting on Cornell, although I dont think I'll get accepted. Next year I plan to apply to quite a few school if all else fails this year. But, as for the possibility of transfer after a bad HS performance its entirely possible. I know of people who transfered to high profile schools with bad high school records

Yeh, I know about the bad hs and getting into good schools, GOOD LUCK w/ ur Cornell...Where do u go to school at? I go to a Comm. Coll.

I have good stats in high school. My SATs are a 2020 and I have a 3.66 unweighted and a 4.1-4.3 weighted. I'm going to a UC this fall and I want to transfer to a top private school for Fall 2008. Do you think this is likely? I was very involved in high school and I've posted my stats all around the board. What kind of GPA in college would I need to be considered by top schools?

I'm also concerned about the transfer essay. Can anyone elaborate on exactly what they are looking for in that?

Set ur goals to a 4.0 and nothing less but remember your chances are still good if you go below that too. HS GPA is not too important after a couple years of college but dont expect to get in a top university with 15 credits and a 4.0 in college and a 2.9 that wont happen. Sorry

I don't have a 2.9...

I worked really hard and have an awesome high school transcript. I am planning on transferring after one year of college, not two.

I was just accepted to Cornell with a 4.0 and a 2.9 HS GPA as a sophmore transfer (meaning im a firstyear atm)
