Confused About Transfering and Process

Hello all,

I use to be pretty active on these forums, last year when i was a senior in high school. Long Story short, i had excellent high school grades, mediocre SAT scores (here is my "chance" thread from last year for anyone interested <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/436179-final-chance-thread-fordham-good-gpa-horrible-sat-great-ec-s.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/436179-final-chance-thread-fordham-good-gpa-horrible-sat-great-ec-s.html</a>) and a LOT of EC's, and I want to do Pre-Med and currently i volunteer in a reputable hospital (that has a medical school-prestigious). My "boss" has also told me that he will place me into different units so i can get the best experience with the possibility of doing some research.

I got into the school i wanted (Fordham University) however was not able to attend because of the price tag, and now im pretty miserable at my city school, as the 1st semester is almost over. I have almost no motivation which really sucks, and most probably im projecting my first semester GPA to be anywhere between 3.4 to 3.6. I suppose i can do much better but it was pretty heart breaking to come to this school in the first place.

I want to call Fordham soon and let them know my situation since i only withdrew that acceptance less than 4 months ago. However do most students apply for transfer in their second year, for the fall of the year after? For example, September '09, i will be a sophmore at my college, do i apply for September '10? (that way im applying as a transfer in junior)

or do most people transfer after there first year of college...?

Also if i maintain lets say a 3.5 GPA, would i have a decent chance in transferring to some good schools such as Fordham, NYU, Cornell etc... that will not put so much into account my SAT scores but my high school activities and high school GPA? What else do i need to do to strengthen my application?

Again, i am planning to start applying next school year when i am a sophomore.

Thanks for the help.

If you transfer after your 1st yr (Fall '09 transfer) they will focus a lot on HS, because you will only have one semester of college completed. Applying Soph year for Spring '10 or Fall '10 transfer will increase your chances at NYU/Cornell. Since you got into Fordham before, you most likely will again.

But if you couldn’t afford private college before, can you now?

GPA-wise, I’m applying to Cornell too (from NYU), and I don’t think a 3.5 will cut it. You should try for at least a 3.7, the higher the better. Don’t let the fact that you don’t like your current college stop you from succeeding - instead, let it motivate you to get high grades for transfer. I’m sorry you don’t like it there. I wish you the best of luck  Also, what NYU/Cornell schools are you applying to?

Hey Thanks for replying. sorry i typed so much i forgot to explain that part. I will take out loans, for 2 years which would be do-able, but i wont have to take out much. The main issue with Fordham was since the tuition for me was around 28-30k, my parents would have been able to support me there for 2-3 years, but ofcourse, if they did that, it would take a lot out of us, and i might have had to take out loans, and if i am to go to med or grad school (actually im aiming optometry), i would just stack up on the loans.

Last year i also applied to NYU and got on waitlist for GSP i think, but after fordham i withdrew all the schools that had deadlines (except the CUNY schools which dont have a deadline and the one im attending). So if i try NYU next year its CAS, and if i try for Cornell it will be the one equivalent to CAS (i forgot the name of it i know its not CAS though), however i have never applied to cornell before.

What is the latest people transfer?

Usually transfers enter as soph or jrs. But you should check the individual school to find out their policy.

Ok thanks…

Also, What are some things besides GPA that are important for transfer? (lets say ur past the 25 or so credit phase and SAT doesnt matter anymore)

Like when you apply for freshman undergrad i know they take into account EC activities, awards, sat scores, blah blah…what makes the person stand out? Also do they require a lot of paper work equal to the amount you have to do when applying as freshman?

quite honestly, a 3.4-3.6 your first semester of community college is going to preclude you from being a competitive applicants from either nyu or cornell no matter the rest of your application…i cant saying anything with much confidence about fordham, but i think much more of a 3.4-3.6 will make it very hard for you to transfer to fordham as well…

gl

Im in a 4 year college actually.

Dufflebagjesus, mind telling me why you think this? I got accepted to Fordham before so are you also saying that would not matter, given that i have a very valid explanation to why i could not attend before and can now?

the fact that you were accepted for freshman admissions is not going to effect whether or not you will be accepted for transfers…do not bank on this, you are just another applicant to them at this point

cant speak for any particular school but nyu, but transfer admission rates tend to be lower than freshman rates

a 3.5 gpa from a city school is not going to be at all competitive for nyu cas or, sheesh, cornell…those are, i think, pretty far reaches for you, especially when sat’s are taken into account (although they tend to matter less as you move through college)…fordham may actually be a good fit when all is said and done, but you are not a lock to get in and the fact you were accepted before is not going to help you

if you are serious about wanting to transfer to schools at the nyu or even cornell level from your city school i would recommend that you put in two full years whever your at and raise that gpa up into the 3.8-4.0 level (if you get a 3.5 this semester, that pretty much means nothing less than A’s here on out)

best of luck

Well yeah its just first semester, and i dont plan to go anywhere for the spring term, so i will most likely raise the grades up. Also what about in terms of activities? I did a lot in highschool are those taken into account? After highschool (which is currently) im doing volunteer work in different patient units at a Hospital. Is that good enough for now?

flaming-

your hs ec’s will certainly be looked at for transfers…but remember, quality over quantity…a couple activities you have a leadership position and have a strong commitment to will resonate more with adcomms than having a whole lot of resume “fillers”

that being said…doing volunteer work in a hospital is very nice especially considering youre pre-med, shows a commitment to a career path…but if that is all you are doing at this point, i would advise you to get more involved in your campus community and explore some of the clubs that you may be interested in or you may have a pretty bare bones ec list come transfer time
