Confused About UC Transfer Requirement

Hi there,

I am looking to possibly transfer to UCI for the Fall 2014 semester. I took 2 years of Spanish in High School and received an A in both Spanish I and Spanish II. Does this satisfy the IGETC requirement for transferring to UCI (or to any UC school)?

But this page details the graduation requirements for UCI students when it comes to a Language other than English: University of California - Irvine

Is it saying that to graduate from UCI, I would need to fulfill all of these language requirements, too? Would it be in my best interest to try to take Spanish courses this semester and the next at my community college before I transfer? I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me on this matter. Thank you!

Based On the link you posted it says that you can use three years of high school Spanish to waive the requirement. I believe that everything that it lists is showing you your various options for how to fulfill the foreign language requirement. If you only have two years of high school Spanish, I’m not certain what that would mean for you.

2 years of foreign language classes in high school definitely satisfy the foreign language requirement in IGETC.

2 years satisfies the IGETC but not necessarily specific university requirements.

Thank you for your help 2016Candles and Cayton! Anyone else care to chime in with their input? Does anyone know if I completed two years of Spanish in high school as opposed to three, do I have to take a whole year of Spanish classes at community college in order to transfer to UCI/fulfill UCI GE requirements? I’m going to meet with a counselor hopefully this week to get things figured out…

It looks like you may have to take another foreign language class specifically for UCI’s requirements.

Best to discuss this with your counselor. They’re good with this stuff. :P

Okay, thank you Cayton! I appreciate the help.

If you fulfill IGETC you don’t have to worry about all that stuff. That’s for non-transfers; i.e. freshman applicants. IGETC is a substitution for all that gen ed crap.

But yeah, go over it with a counselor

No problem. Good luck!
