I am on the waiting list for UC. I've read contrasting things about the decisions for the waiting list students coming out now to possibly until the end of summer. However, I need to submit my housing deposit to UCLA. I don't want to do this if I am going to end up going there. But I can't wait forever. Realistically how long could I be waiting for my final decision from UCLA?

Assume you’re going to UCLA, to be safe. Submit your housing deposit like you would if you weren’t on the Chicago waiting list.

But if UChicago accepts me then it would be like loosing possibly 1000’s of dollars.
You see I have an alternative. I could ask them to use the financial aid money to pay the deposit, essentially putting off the payment until I know about UChicago. I just need to know which option is best

Don’t you have to pay either way? Just make sure you have a dorm room to live in in case you end up at UCLA.

Wasn’t the deadline to send in your SIR for UCLA May 1st?

Standing to lose a deposit is the waitlist system works and yes it definitely sucks. But colleges want you to commit to them by may 1st and use the deposit as a financial incentive to get you to stay with them after you’ve committed. Unless you’re a person who needs significant financial aid you’ll have to pay the deposit, if you are a person who needs significant financial aid you might be able to get it waved (I know some people have had Chicago do that for them). But you can’t just get them to apply the financial aid to the deposit as that completely defeats the point of having the deposit in the first place.
