Hello! I will soon be a Big Red next year and I am confused about which track I want to pursue. I am a pre-med that is interested in becoming a psychiatrist, and I don't know if I should major in psychology and follow the neuroscience concentration or major in bio and follow the neurobiology and behavior concentration.. I am interested in mental disorders and their treatment, dealing with the criminally insane, and connecting animal behavior to human behavior. Also, I am genuinely concerned about how hard neuro and behavior will be I heard it was very difficult, so I am not sure if that's what I want to do. Thanks!

Many pre meds don’t realize this but what reallly matters to medical school that relates to your major is your GPA. So obviously unless you also are interested in engineering, don’t do it unless you think you can get a 3.7+. Choose something thats relatively easy, since if you are interested in other classes, you can just sign up anyway.

I usually recommend that people go into AEM, because the classes are easy, and if you dont get into medical school, it’s a wonderful backup cause you can find plenty of jobs, but this depends on preference.

For you Psychology would be a good major since it’s easy and even if you dont get into medical school you can become a psychologist. Don’t get overly concerned w/ how difficult a class is before you do it. Neuro is a hard class but it doesn’t really matter. It’s not a required pre med class, so just skip it if you are afraid of it and don’t major in it. But even if you do bad… , it’s not going to break you for getting into medical school.

Take a look at the Human Development major in the Ciollege of Human Ecology.

It doesn’t matter what you major in as long as you finish your requirements for med school. So you should pick the major you are most interested in and which you can get a good GPA. So phychology sounds like a good idea and neuroscience too as long as you can do well in them
