I'm in a bit of a dilema right now. Right now I'm a Junior (Senior in the fall) and I know that most people apply to colleges in the fall of their senior year or the summer between junior and senior year. HOWEVER, I am really counting on my various classes, extracurriculars, and stuff that I'm going to do in Senior year that will make up the best part of my application. Not to mention I haven't taken the SAT yet (this fall). My question is what should I do? Is it possible to apply when you have all your senior classes done or something of the sort?

It can be a bit intimidating when you first begin the process of applying to college. All schools will allow you to submit your application in the fall of your senior year. Some will take your application during Christmas break, and some will even take your application in Feb/March. I think there may even be some schools that will accept your application after you have graduated from hs-but I think that is limited to the community college or state colleges.
Try to work on identifying the schools you want to apply to and attend if accepted. With that list you can determine the deadlines for applications, and work from there. I hope this gives you a starting place-Good Luck!

Thanks APOL! The problem is though, how will I include my senior grades in the fall of my senior year? It's not possible and I don't know how it would work in Feb/March either.

I looked, and all the schools I want to go to have fall deadlines.

Most schools want, and for regular decision will consider, the first semester senior year grades when evaluating an application. So if you don't apply early anywhere, your senior grades & activities can assist you.

1st semester senior grades are usually sent in seperately, many times much later than the app was submitted...its called a mid-year report. also i suggest that you sign up for sat/act soon and that you take sat IIs in june. you can always retake the satI/act in the fall of sr. year, but why not give yourself 2 chances?

Socks, I would love to, but I'm in Austria right now on exchange (until July) :)

So basically, I'm a bit screwed in terms of SATs, SATSII, and grades. Oi, There go my Ivy dreams!

Being in Austria on an exchange would count as a major EC. I don't know why you seem to be thinking that you have to make up something in terms of ECs. You sound ahead of most students.

In addition, there's no rule that you have to apply to college when you're a h.s. senior. It could be advantageous to take a productive gap year -- working, traveling, studying something interesting , volunteering -- after h.s. and then to apply during that gap year.

i am not famliar with austria, but SATs are offered in greece for kids who want to go to university in the states and for american kids who are spending time in greece. so, you might want to look into it. i find it hard to believe that its absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to take SATs in austria.

that said theres nothing wrong wth taking all of those tests in the fall

ok i looked on college board's website and found out that there are 2 test centers in austria:

-Salzburg, American Internat'l School
-Vienna, American Internat'l School

Heh, thanks socks and everyone else. I love this board because eveyrone is always so helpful!

I can't take the SAT here as I don't have any books or anything else I can study but I'll take it in October, which will hopefully be early enough for applications. Soooo, it'll look something like this

This year:
-Learn German!
-Get some nice rec. letters from my Austrian teachers (which I hope would do for college apps)

Summer:
-Study for SATs
-Apply for scholarships

October/November:
-SAT and two more SAT IIs
-Keep grades up
-Apply to colleges

Or I could take a gap year and do something incredible. I'm not sure if colleges like Brown accept things like that, but I'll check. Thanks so much for the help, it really means a lot to me :)
