I accepted my work study award...it's only $1950...and I'm kind of confused. If I were to get a different job and still easily make that amount to cover it, would I be able to do that? Is there a way to decline the work study now after I already accepted it and then just pay the $1950 out of my own pocket through a different job?

You don’t have to get any job at all. Work study doesn’t give you any money, and if you accepted the award but didn’t get a job you haven’t received any money. The main thing work study does is make it cheaper for employers involved in the program to hire you, which makes it easier for you to get a job.

The only thing work study does is make you a more worthwhile and attractive hire because your pay is being subsidized (up to a certain amount) by the government.

Thanks for the replies, guys. So if I accepted my award but didn’t get a job, then what? I would pay the $1950 out of my pocket at the end of the year or something else?

^ No. Just because you accepted the award doesn’t mean you automatically get it. You have to work for that money. If you didn’t work at all you don’t get any of the money and you don’t have to pay the school any of that unclaimed money.

I wouldn’t have to pay the school any of the money? So it’s not part of my financial aid package at all then?

Correct. You don’t have to pay anything back because you never directly received $1950 from the school or the government.
