Hey guys

Just when i thought i was starting to understand the admissions process, this new SAT policy kind of screwed me up. I have read about it on the college board website but that does not really answer my questions.

Question 1:
I am taking the SAT 1 this January which is like a month before this new policy is launched. How does the sending of my scores work. When i receive my marked scores, are they automatically sent or do i have to choose to send them(or not to send them). If i receive my scores before the launch date of the new policy, how do i cancel my scores from being sent?

Question 2: Lets say i take another SAT 1 after the launch date. I know i have to provide names of colleges when i register. Does that mean the moment I get my scores, the colleges get them too? Or do i get a chance to see the scores and then decide whether i want to send them or not? So basically my question is, how long do I have to cancel my scores after i receive them before the college gets them.

I am definitely over thinking it but its bugging me. Please, please answer if you what to do.

From what I know about how it works now if you want to wait to send your scores to a college, you can do so. The SAT allows you to send your scores to about four colleges or so for for free if you register tham when you take the SAT. You do have the option though of not registering to send them to any schools. You will get your scores back, and then you can pay to send them to the schools of your choice.

IF you registered to end them to some schools, they will be automatically sent and recieved at about the same time you recieve your scores.

The new SAT policy only applies to the class of '10 and beyond - I'll assume you fit the bill, because you'd have no real reason to take a Jan. SAT otherwise - so when you take the test doesn't really matter, you'll still be able to pick which scores colleges see.

As for sending test scores to colleges, I'm fairly sure there is no option to cancel scores after you've seen them. I do think, however, that there is a way you can cancel score reports within a few days after the test. If you know you did badly (e.g. got sick, didn't finish, whatever) then you could cancel those scores.

In my opinion, you're best off not sending scores to colleges until you actually apply. I don't think they pay much attention to them - I sent my ACT scores to 4 colleges and all I got was a letter from one thanking me for my interest blah blah. Unless you're sure you'll do well, you might just want to pay the extra dough to send scores in at the same time as applications.

ok so what you guys are saying is .. all i have to do is when i am registering for the SAT test dates, i do not select colleges. So after i get my scores, i can spend extra money and decide which scores to send to which colleges when i apply to them. Am i correct??

Yes, I think you've got the idea.

You don't really have to worry about sending score reports to colleges until you're actually sending applications in senior year. But if you want to, you could opt to send scores for free with the test - the downside being that they'll see the score good or bad, which kind of defeats the purpose of the new policy.

Good luck!

hmm i have a similar problem. i am also writing it in jan.
