I am currently attending a CCC and plan on transferring to a California University. I was wondering how much they look at and factor in past academic records. I attended Uconn for 2 years (starting in 2004) and did not do well at all (let's just say 2.0 gpa was a reach for me). I only ended up with about 15-20 transferable credits from there. As of now I have a 4.0 gpa in the CCC I am attending, but am unsure as to what my gpa would be if the gpa's from Uconn and my current college were combined. Do you think that the schools I apply to would look past my past academic record (I understand they will factor it in), but would look more highly upon the work I did here in California? I have 2 more semesters to go and was hoping if I maintain close to a 4.0 here that they would admit me upon the work I have done at my current college, or did I blow my chances at getting into any reputable school by doing so poorly before at Uconn? Any advice or input you guys could offer me would be greatly appreciated!

My brother is in the same boat. He started off at SJSU and did poorly there. Now he is in a jc and doing much better. His counselors have told him that as long as he keeps up a decent GPA, he will be eligible to sign TAG with any of the UC’s that offer it. Works out for him because he wants to go to UCI, which offers TAG.

If you want to go to UCB/LA, you still have a shot as long as you keep a high GPA and finish as many prereqs as possible. They will see the upward trend in your performance and you can explain any discrepancies in the essay/application.

Thanks for your input, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one in this position. I’ve been following IGTEC for the most part so I will hopefully have all my pre-req’s out of the way by the time I transfer. Thanks again.

No problem. Also, in addition to IGETC you should also check assist.org to see if your major requires any additional coursework.

Just explain in your personal statement why you did poorly before…but I think now that your doing good they would understand…and you can be guaranteed admission with TAG with all the UC’s besides berk and la…and if you want to transfer by fall 10…I think the deadline to sign the TAG is end of this month…not sure…meet with a counsler:)

Thanks for your encouragement everyone :)
