Confused by online decision

It says: CIT ECE Waitlist

I understand that means waitlist for ECE, but does it also mean waitlist for CIT?

When I applied an admissions person told me that you can be accepted into CIT and not ECE, but to list ECE if you have any interest in the program. Though I did have some interest at the time, and didn't want to close any doors, I no longer have any interest in ECE. I plan to pursue Mechanical Engineering, but am now wondering if listing ECE hurt my chances.

I called the admissions office for clarification on my "CIT ECE Waitlist" confusion, but they said that no one is available to discuss decisions and I just have to wait for the letter.

When I first saw the waitlist designation I was so disappointed. Do I have reason to be hopeful that I might still be accepted at CIT? Or should I prepare for the worst?

I'm fairly certain that it means you got waitlisted at CIT. And since you got waitlisted at CIT you definitely weren't accepted into ECE. If I were you I would accept a position on the waitlist, then write a letter to admissions explaining that you now want to major in mechanical engineering.

Bummer. I wonder if the ECE hurt my chances. That would really bother me since the admissions person said it wouldn't.

I guess I will wait for decisions from Northwestern and Johns Hopkins before I decide to stay on the waitlist at CMU. Do you think that being waitlisted at CMU is indicative of what I might expect from NU and JHU? I have been admitted at WUSTL.

What are your stats?

after logged in, i saw:

Preference College Department Program Decision
1 MCS BSC Accept
2 CIT CHE Cancel

am I accepted by CMU ?

thanks

Yeah, it means you are accepted to CMU, to the college in your 1st preference.

I guess this means that if somebody is given their 1st preference, their 2nd and subsequent ones are automatically canceled. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

plaknas,
I really was confused with their wording "accept" and "cancel ".

thanks a lot

to the OP. you could still be accepted into CIT. I had a friend who only listed CIT: ECE as his only choice and didn't put any alternates. He was waitlisted for ECE but got into all the other departments in CIT.

My stats (real quick) are:
Top 2% of class
GPA 3.9
M 770 CR 740 W 710
SAT 2: Math 2 800, Chem 710, Physics 700
Lots of EC including orchestra, clubs, etc.
500 hours of community service
Have my own pet sitting business
Etc.

To alexhernandez: Before I let myself have too much hope, did your friend's online listing say "waitlist?"

Brown2009, plaknas: You can be accepted into more than one school. Then you choose which one you want to attend. In this case it looks like you were only accepted into one.

yes it did. he got the letter before the online display, so he wasn't as paranoid.

College Choices
Preference College Department Program Decision
1 CIT ECE Waitlist

just got it for you

Thanks alexhernandez. I'm not getting my hopes up, just in case. But I am comforted to know that there is still some possibility of getting in.

@op. I had the same thing online, but then I got the fat envelope today so........ There is chance you could have gotten into CIT, just not ece.

alexhernandez and toasteroven....THANK YOU!

I realize that what happened to the two of you need not necessarily be the same for me, but you have given me hope. Thanks to this board, I have gotten more information than I did from the CMU admissions office!

I have a question kind of opposite to here...

When I applied, I was mainly focused on mechanical so I put that, and I was accepted, but my decision letter specifically mentions that I can't do ECE. Is it really that binding in that if I change my mind after a year I really can't change to ECE?

From my understanding, ECE is the only one that you wouldn't be able to pursue. Their program is #1 in the country and so popular that the only way to pursue that major is to be accepted at the time of admission. That said, if you had gotten into the program, you could choose to major in something else, but the only way to major in ECE is to get in now. So if you go to CMU it is with the understanding that all the CIT majors are on the table, except ECE.

For anyone following this, my letter came and I was NOT waitlisted to the school, just for ECE. It's annoying that I have been in a bad mood for the past few days, but all is forgiven now.

too bad, ebhbmom. i was hopeful you will be admitted to cit (i am in the same situation now - ece waitlist online , waiting for physical letter). looks like the admissions folks/eng rep at cmu gave misleading info that putting ece does not hurt.

does ‘not admitted’ mean rejected?
