Hello!!
well to give you guys a little back ground information...I recently graduated from community college in Florida (honors, PTK, good resume...) My major is International relations, later I want to focus on human rights. Well I got accepted to George Washington University and I really like the school but: Im missing a lot of money! (like 20k per year!) I ve applied to outside scholarships with no luck. On the other hand I also got accepted to the honors college at Florida International University in Miami (where i live) I am 95% sure all expenses are covered because I have a special scholarship for FL residents. So, this is where my dilemma begins: Do I go to D.C and probably get a loan or do I stay at FIU for my undergrad and later on transfer? I ve had a really hard time making this decision and Im running out of time! Comments, suggestions and advices are very welcomed!!

How many years at GW? 2 or 3? That’s 40K or 60K. How that could be worth almost zero debt from the FL school is beyond me. With that you can pay for grad school.

I’d speak w/GW one more time – tell them the offer you have a FIU and see if they counter with an offer. If not, then respectfully decline and never look back, singing happily at the amazing good fortune you have at FIU.

People would give their left arms to have what you have in front of you at FIU. Congrats.

GW’s loss, to be frank.

First, follow the above advice and make it clear to GW that they’re your number 1 choice, but that it isn’t feasible without more help from them.

If that doesn’t work, it really comes down to a personal choice. I attended an Ivy League school at great financial cost, but could have gone to the University of Oregon with full scholarship plus a living stipend. I don’t love the $100k in debt that I racked up, but I don’t regret the decision to attend Yale… not even for a microsecond.

Elite schools and programs that put your career on a different track can be powerful things that are hard to quantify financially. In the end, it’s just about you making a judgment call about how much it means to you to attend GW.

Thanks you guys! I am preparing a letter of appeal with one of my proffs and a friend of mine who goes to Yale like one of you. I’ll have my fingers crossed and see what happens. I’ve got in contact with an alumni from SIPA @ FIU and he has an impressive resume…even got a rotary scholarship so its not like im doomed if I cant go to GW. Nonetheless DC is an impressive city and the school too… we’ll see, thanks for the advices!
