My orientation starts in 3 days and so I've started looking at some courses that I want to take. Only problem is, I have no idea about anything about courses. I don't know what courses I can take, what courses I need to take, etc. can anyone please help me with this. I am an incoming freshman engineer.

Well, you definitely should take a math course. The one you take depends on your AP calc scores and how interested you are in math. The options:

Math 105 Data, functions, and graphs: if you are really bad at math
Math 115 Calc I: if you are decent at math but have no ap credit
Math 116 Calc II: if you got a 4 or 5 on the AB calc test or a 4 on the BC
Math 215 Calc III: if you got a 5 on the BC test
Math 156 Honors Calc II with applications: if you got a 4 or 5 on the calc test (ab or bc) and want a challenge. This class is made for engineers.
Math 185 Honors Calc I with theory: if you don't have AP credit but are really good at math and like proofs.
Math 186 Honors Calc II with theory: if you got a 4 or 5 on the calc test and are really good at math and like proofs.
Math 295 Honors Calc I for geniuses: do I need to explain?

For chemistry:

Chem 130/125/126 General Chem: if you don't have a 5 on the AP chem test
Chem 210/211 Organic Chem: if you have a 5 on the AP chem test

For Physics:

Physics 140 or Honors Physics 160

For an engineering class (both of these are required for the first year):

Engr 101: computer programming
Engr 100: a team based project class that has different sections, each section is a different project

Other classes to consider:
Engr 110 - if you have no idea what you want to major in
Econ 101 - required for many engineering majors and can be used as social science credit

You should take about 16 credits total

wow thank you so much!!!! One question though, if I got a 4 on the AP chem exam and do well on the chem placement exam does that make me eligible to take organic chemistry?

I'm not sure, you'll have to ask your advisor.

Chemistry Placement

* The Chemistry Placement Exam is required for all engineering students and will either recommend that you start with Chemistry 130 (General Chemistry) or Chemistry 210 (Organic Chemistry). Your placement is determined not only by your Chemistry Exam score but also your Math placement and your SAT or ACT Math scores. The majority of students are recommended for Chem 130. Lecture section 400 of Chem 130 is a smaller lecture section with an extra hour of class designed for students who might be coming with a little less preparation. All engineering students are required to take a chemistry course. Some students will be required to take Chemistry 210/211 depending on the program they are planning on declaring in. The only way to place out of the Chemistry lab requirement is to have a 5 on the Chemistry AP exam, received A-levels or IB credit, or have transfer credit from another institution.

In a nutshell, as long as you do well on the placement test and show some basic competency in math, you're eligible to take Orgo. The only difference the AP test makes is if you get a 5, you place out of the engineering chemistry lab requirement.

Finding out the answers to these questions, what you should take, what you qualify for and qualify out of , conferring with your advisor to decide and then signing up for the classes available is essentially what you will be doing for 2 1/2 days during your orientation. So don't worry about it. If anything, look through the booklet on Freshman seminars and decide which ones you think you might want to take.

Thanks for the great reaply guys! I had one more question. How hard is the chemistry placement exam?

It barely covers any AP-level material. I think there was just one question on the entire exam which wasn't covered in my standard high school chemistry class. As long as it's somewhat fresh in your mind, you should be fine.

THis is a good thread!!

What if I am a LSA freshmen wishing to enter the Ross ProgramM??

^ **wishing to enter the BBA program in 2nd year.
