Hello!
For awhile now I have been cluttering up my search history by researching majors, and as I now finish up my junior year of highschool, my internet lurking has only grown more frequent and more panicked.
Many of my friends already have some clue as to what direction they want to take their schooling, and since the beginning of highschool, I have been experimenting with my own passions and interests.
I know what direction I would like to take my own education, but major wise I am conflicted.
I have loved to read and write for some time. I like to write poetry, have taken journalism classes online, and have participated in writing courses over the past couple years. I am extremely interested in pursuing a major that allows me to write in my career, but I am also interested in advertising and how to sell and attract a consumer on and/or to a product. For instance, I find visual merchandising, copywriting, advertising and consumer behavior all extremely interesting.
I know that journalism would be a great major for someone with an interest in writing, but I also know that it does not typically cover advertising. Communication covers journalism AND advertising, correct?
I would double major in advertising and journalism, but I am aware that there are few jobs in both fields, and I have unfortunately discovered that there are also few advertising schools around where I live (Virginia).
I could go into marketing instead of advertising, but I am admittedly more of a creative person and would rather avoid working on the purchasing side of things.
I have been also been considering copywriting as a career since it is a mix of advertising and writing.
Would communications touch up on both journalism and advertising?
Is it too broad?
Is communications really as hard of a field to find a job in as people say, and would it be a suitable major for copywriting?
Thanks for reading this long rant.
I appreciate all the help.
