Ah, I'm really confused. When do you send in your CSS/FAFSA in? The day of the deadline of the school application or later? O_o

depends on the school. Dartmouth's deadline for fin aid is same as the app, but for some other schools, it's in Feb. So check with your specific schools

Dudboi, I believe you're mistaken, Dartmouth is Feb 1 for financial aid too. I know though that UChicago wants it by Jan 1 for internationals like us.

FAFSA doesn't even come out until Jan 1...

Check YOUR college websites. The deadlines for submission for all forms will be there. The deadlines vary from school to school.

For Dartmouth the deadlines are as follows:

FOr U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents
January 1 - February 1

Regular Decision Applicants register for and submit the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE and the Noncustodial Parent PROFILE if necessary to CSS
Financial Aid Applicants, including Early Decision Admitted Students must file the FAFSA with the Federal Processor

February 1

Deadline for Regular Decision Applicants to submit signed copies of student's and parents' tax returns and W-2's (if not completed, submit previous year's returns), and, if applicable, the noncustodial parent's tax return and W-2's and/or the Business/Farm Supplement

Deadlines & Notifications

For international students:
Copies of the latest tax returns filed by your family with your country's government. The 2007 tax returns should later be submitted when filed. If your family does not file a tax return with your government, statements from employers certifying earnings are required. (Employer statements may not be substituted for the tax return if tax returns are filed.) All tax returns and statements from employers must be in English or a translated copy must be attached.

If your family lives and works in the U.S., in addition to completing the international application, please follow the instructions for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents with the exception of filing the FAFSA.

*The deadline for the International application is January 1, 2008. *

International Applicants
Canadian applicants:

Deadline : February 1

Mexican Applicants:

Mexican Applicants

whoops, sorry, yep dartmouth is jan 1 for internationals - one more form for me to fill out i guess.

anyway, for internationals:

uchicago, duke, cornell, dartmouth require the forms by jan 2/1/4/1 respectively.

harvard, princeton, stanford, mit, upenn, columbia, brown require the forms sometime in feb/march.

you should try to file the fafsa on or after jan 1.

those deadlines are for when the schools are supposed to receive the fafsa and css profile info.

you should not try to file the fafsa on those deadline dates...they will be late getting to the school of your choice and you run the chance of missing out on whatever grants and scholarships the school will give you on top of whatever federal aid you qualify for.

FWIW, at a financial aid seminar I attended, the presenter said it doesn't matter that much if you file the FAFSA on January 1 or February 1 ... but it does matter to get it in around 2/1 to get the best advantage. He stated it doesn't help that much getting it in on 1/1 or even the second week in January.

Not exactly true, because filing the FAFSA on feb.1 will cause you to miss FA deadlines as even filing on line it takes a couple of days for the FAFSA to be processed. You will also have to factor in days if you need to make corrections or if you are applying to more schools than the FAFSA currently gives room for you to send your reports to.

It matters if your school's deadline is prior to February 1. If you miss the deadline, you may miss out on some consideration for funds. NEVER miss deadlines. In fact, when possible, try to aim for an early submission.

How could financial aid advisor say "it doesn't matter". It doesn't matter if the deadline is AFTER February 1...but if it's before it is prudent to meet the deadline the college(s) specifies.
