Confused over submission of Common App...

I'm a UK student so it's difficult for me to get up-to-date resources. As a result, I only have a Harvard prospectus from last year. The back of the prospectus, before the printed copy of the Common App, says to submit the Common App ASAP, and that the short answer on an EC and the essay can be submitted later.

I recently got an e-mail from Harvard basically saying to hurry up with the first part of the app so that they can schedule interviews etc. I have filled out all of the app bar the short answer on the EC and the essay. According to the Harvard prospectus from last year, I should be able to submit at this point. However, when I go to submit the Common App, it tells me that I will not be able to change anything once it's sent, and that anything else will have to be sent directly to the institution.

Is it even possible to send the Common App without the writing section, just to get me into the systems of Harvard and the other colleges, and then send the writing section along to them later on when I'm done, online?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I can tell (I asked the same question), you can print out a copy of your common app and mail in the printed copy with “tbd” written in the essay and short answer sections.

Now, I am no expert, and I have specifically asked admissions about ths and got mo answer so take it with a grain of salt.

to submit your common app online, everything, including the common app essay, must be submitted. you can submit the harvard supplement later (which also includes an additional essay).
