i didnt really know where to post this, but this seems like the best forum to pick.
im having trouble picking a major for college, here's why..
so i love the classics, ive been taking latin for 8 years, greek for 4 years, greek/roman history courses etc, and i totally want to continue learning more in this area in college
i would like to major in the classics however as much as i love classics i do not want a career in it, for example, a latin teacher.
on the flip side, i am also really passionate about biology and science and would very much like to go into the medical field, and have wanted to for a long time.

would it be possible for me to be a classics major, while still taking the necessary pre med courses for med school? or is this strange?

I would recommend a pre-med curriculum with a minor in classic languages, that way you won’t have a lot of language classes (but still enough so you can pursue your passion) taking your time away from the challenging pre-med courses.

thats true, i dont really know what the courseload for either is like
ive just heard of english major, history majors, and the like going to med school and wondered if maybe i could do that too

There’s no such thing as a pre-med major. Yes, you’ll have plenty of time to get a classics major and do pre-med requirements. It’ll take some planning but it’s doable.

It would be very possible, as long as you are willing to work for it (I’m assuming that you are). I’ve heard that at a lot of colleges the pre-med courses are pretty difficult and you have to do well in them to get into med school, so make sure your language studies won’t take too much time away from the major you actually want a career in.

I would recommend maybe a biology major and then classics minor? I don’t know what the best course of action would be to give you the best chances for your top choice for med school. I’m not entirely sure since I not even considering med school myself. Sorry!

I was a biology and classics double major. At Brown it was extremely feasible. It will depend on the course requirements. At any school you could definitely be a classics major and take the pre-med pre-reqs as your other courses if that’s what you want to do.

I second iwannabebrown. My daughter was also a classics major and now is in med school. I had to chuckle because after one med school interview she said she would rather teach classics than go to that med school. You never know
