I keep getting "mixed messages" about this. Some friends stated that "College X" paid for their flights, trains, food, etc. to travel to and stay at the college for the admitted student preview week, but others who visited the exact same school in the same week said the school didn't cover one cent of their travel costs, etc.

Why is this? Can someone please explain? Does it have to do with whether an admitted student has received financial aid or not?

And do some schools pay for ALL (accepted) students to visit? Do some pay only for the students they "really want" (meaning for athletics or top academics, etc.)?

Are some schools much more "generous" regarding visits than others? If so, can we start a discussion about which schools these are? :-)

Some students with lesser financial ability to travel may get costs paid for. And some schools may offer to pay for their coveted admitees, regardless of ability.

As to who does this: I dunno. And really don’t care. If that’s how they budget money and see it as a good expenditure to get the best matriculants, it’s nothing to me.

I don’t know about different College,at Cornell university if student get invite to attend “Admitted Student Day” through Diversity Program total cost of visit will be cover regardless of financial need. But at the same time if student just plan to attend “Cornell Days for admitted student” they will have to pay for their own transportation and etc… my DD got invite from Diversity Program that offer to pay for transportation, but we did not use it cause we live about 3 hours away, so we drive :)

I would guess that the majority of prospective students pay their own way. I have heard stories of some kids getting free trips, but I’d suspect that they are probably students who are highly sought-after by that school as well as having documented financial need. Also, this seems to happen moe often at the more selective schools (and/or those with a significant endowment.)

Ah, I see. Because I know several people on the East Coast who got accepted to Stanford and have to fly, and one person told me they have their flight and expenses completely covered by the school, and the other person said that nothing was covered (and she had no idea why another person was being reimbursed). Both were A students with decent ec’s, etc. Neither was “overly unique”. So I just wondered why…
