Confused with business school degrees

Hi, I am a Junior at an American School in the Middle east and am interested in business schools in Canada.

I am confused with the degrees offered by the top schools (Ivey, Schulich, McGill, Queens, UBC) as not all of them offer BBA degrees.

(1) Are these equivalent UG business degrees - Ivey HBA/McGill BCom/ Queens Commerce/ Schulich BBA/ UBC BCom?

(2) Does the admission to the schools guarantee an UG business study or do we have to reapply in the second/subsequent years to be selected for the business programs?

Thanks.

or which Canadian business school admits students directly from high school (1st year entry)?

McGill admits directly to the Desautels Faculty of Management. I don’t know about the others. The BCom, BBA, HBA are essentially different names for the same degree.

In the US, the degrees are BS in BA, BBA etc. They are all undergraduate degrees in business.

All of them except Ivey (AEO isn’t a guarantee) are direct-entry programs.

^ How many people actually never get into Ivey despite AEO? I wouldn’t want to be stuck in UWO in some other junk.

Thanks - tomofboston, PrincetonDreams & StarsAligned. I prefer a direct entry program.

Please rate my chances for the top Canadian business schools. I am a Canadian with these stats - GPA -3.93 (unweighted), rank - 3/125, AP’s to come - WH/English/Statistics/Economics/Spanish. Reasonably good EC’s. Hoping to do SAT soon (aiming 2200+).

Also, I aspire to do Harvard MBA one day.

Would an undergraduate in business in Canada help me towards the goal? I know you would ask me to do an UG program where I can get a very high GPA (& top GMAT). But my dad believes that a good BBA (or equivalent degree) would land you with a nice job with top financial/management consulting firms (compared to any other social sciences degree) and that work experience would add weight to your MBA application.

What is your opinion?

@ StarsAligned: The lady I spoke to at Ivey said “very few” AEO’s fail to gain admission to the HBA program. Kinda vague but I guess it means that as long as you don’t completely slack off, you’ll get in.

@ Azabhu: That’s great. I think you’ll be competitive for all those programs. Yes, getting a top-notch business degree like Ivey’s HBA can help you considerably in getting a prestigious consultancy/banking job but HBS is another matter altogether. Getting into Harvard’s MBA program isn’t going to be very simple.

OP, if you are coming out of an American high school, even in the Middle East, McGill would require the SAT or ACT. Other Canadian schools may require these tests too.

@PrincetonDreams: I will apply to all of the leading business schools in Canada. Harvard is a 10-year plan, let me walk before I run.

@tomofboston: Thanks. McGill is high in my list and I intend to take SAT soon.

Are there scholarships in the business schools for non-resident Canadians?
