Confused

I was accepted to wisc in late october to the college of letters of science. I want to switch to the college of engineering so I wrote the admissions office an email and they replied back saying "As a first year student you are automatically placed into the college of letters and sciences. You are eligible to apply to the college of engineering when you have completed the prerequisite for that college. Please inform your advisor at SOAR that you are interested in engineering and they will help you pick a schedule designed to meet those prerequisites." This is fine but I also want to be in the honors program at wisc. i just received the application for LS honors and i know there is a separate one for engineering (<a href="http://studentservices.engr.wisc.edu/classes/ehla.html%5B/url%5D">http://studentservices.engr.wisc.edu/classes/ehla.html</a>). which one do I apply to? or can i apply to both? ahhhhhhhhh!

Welcome to the "real" Wisconsin where there are always many conflicting answers and choices! I am pretty sure you can apply to both. I think Don Woolston (<a href="http://www.engr.wisc.edu/lists/deans/woolston_donald.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.engr.wisc.edu/lists/deans/woolston_donald.html</a>) is best to answer your question.

On a seperate note, if you are seriously into engineering, you could into COE as an EGR after your first semester at L&S. Alternatively, wait a few semesters and apply directly to the specific engineering department.

Don't worry, go ahead and apply to the L&S Honors program, this will help in getting the best (most academically challenging) science/math courses, open to honors students only (always exceptions, but more hassles)- the advisors at SOAR will help; you get an honors advisor if you're in the honors program. BTW, the advisor will help you work around the computer's constraints and other problems if they arise- big school, but humans run it and you will not be doing it alone. Sounds like you've done your homework, you and your advisor will be able to solve your dilemna more easily since you checked on things. Remember, the more you put into your education, the more you will get out of it; you're on a good path. Relax, don't lose sleep over this and write that darn honors application essay... It is easy to get out of the Honors program (one nice thing- it is a program, not a separate college, also easy to enter if you qualify at a later date) and people easily switch majors/colleges all the time so don't worry that this is an irrevocable/life changing decision.
