Confused

I'm registered for POSC 130g for spring. This class has a lecture and discussion section. It also has WRIT 140 as concurrent enrollment, including a lab and lecture portion. I've already satisfied the requirement for WRIT 140. Do I still need to register for the lab portion?

You can just register for POSC 130g and its corresponding discussion.

Thanks War Chant. But I just realized I fulfilled the requirement for WRIT 130, not 140. Do I need to take 140 as well? As far as I understand, there is one lower division WRIT requirement, and one upper division (WRIT 340), so wouldn’t I just need 340, and not need to take 140 since I’ve already taken 130?

Writ 130 is usually satisfied by taking eng 101 elsewhere and write 140 by eng 102 elsewhere. Did you take the 101 & 102 english sequence at your previous college or just the 101?

Hello Kulakai,

I took English 101, 102, and 103. But I don’t think any of these courses were counted towards my lower division requirement. I think it was my AP scores for AP Lit and AP Lang.

But if I’ve already satisified the lower division requirement, shouldn’t I not have to take 140? Since 130 is the equivalent of 140?

Just wanted to add, that on my STARS report, it says lower division satisified: WRIT 130, and all I need is to satisfy my upper division, 340.

You should not take WRIT 140, just register for the lecture and disc for POSC 130. If the registration system doesn’t let you, contact your advisor to have them waive the requirement so you can register.

edit: AP lang/lit do not satisfy the writing requirement. some transfer course you took did.

Your eng 101/102/103 satisfied WRIT 130 which is write 140 when taken at USC. You do not need to register for write 140 then. As jbusc mentioned, if you can’t register for posc 103g by itself then contact your advisor.

Here’s the thing, it let me register for POSC 130 without the concurrent 140 when I registered a few months ago. But then a few days ago I was worried I might need to take 140, so I just signed up for that as well. You guys thinkbi can drop the 140 since the 130 covered my lower level requirements?

Thanks!

Just wanted to add to the above: I was able to register for just the POSC class alone just fine.

Yes you should be able to drop the 140 as you’ve already satisfied the lower level writing requirement with the previous english courses you took. If you want to verify that for yourself you can always pull up your school in this unofficial articulation history database:

https://camel.usc.edu/articagrmt/artic_hist_range.aspx

It will show your english course transferring as the write 130/140 equivalent.

It never hurts to call student advising real quick to ask them before you login to drop the class though :)

Is student advising open?

I am not sure. Try giving them a call. You have until the 11th to figure it out I believe and advising should be available after the 1st for sure.

So I just got a reply from the poli sci advisor, and he told me that I’ve already fulfilled my freshmen requirement with 130, and I can just take the posc class. Thanks guys!
