why do I keep getting stuff from caltech when I have never reported to any test agency that i had interest in science/math and my sat math score is pretty low (650)?

Because they love you oh so much!

Why did I get stuff from non-flagship state colleges in the midwest whose average combined SATs were what I got on Math or Verbal alone? Who knows.

It's cheap to send out bushels and bushels of stuff. Somehow you probably caught the bottom edge of our filter. Just throw it out if you're not interested, or have a laugh about it with your friends.

if i really screwed up during my freshman year, do i still have a chance of getting in to caltech?

Yes. Just do better from now on.

i am currently studying j2ee class (java) and i am going to take the exam in about six months. if i pass the exam will i be able to put it on my transcript? will it look good on my application? Will it help me get in? and after i am done i am hoping to get a job for programming. will that count as job exp.?

I screwed up freshman year and got in.

In my opinion, the most important thing is to look at the class (or classes) you screwed up and make sure that that's you do REALLY well in them from that point. You could even get one of your recommendations from a teacher in that subject your junior or senior year. That way, the admissions office will know it's not a weakness- just a screwup- they happen to everyone.

Also, regarding the OP, colleges send out tons of promotional material because the more people apply, the more impressive Caltech's admission statistics are. I think that Caltech's acceptance rate is currently around 21%, though I don't know this year's figure. In a world where selectivity is sometimes mistaken for prestige, the administration might just be trying to drive this number down.

Closer to 15% or 17% this year, if I recall right.
