They probably ask for that so that they can figure out if you’re a good fit for their program based on your research interests and if the faculty you’re interested would want you in their lab or if they’re even accepting new grad students. I guess if you’re able to list professors whose work is clearly compatible with your research interests, then that shows you at least took time to research their faculty thoroughly enough to make good picks and that the program would probably be a good fit for you. This is just my impression of why they would ask for this information. I’m not sure how much it’ll impact your admission decision. I would imagine the only way it could really hurt you is if no one in your field of interest happens to be accepting grad students or if you do a really bad job at choosing faculty members for your list. Although, if they do like you enough to invite you for an interview, they might try to have you interview with the professors you said that you’re interested in. I don’t think it’s necessary to email all of the professors. If there are some that you genuinely have a really strong desire to work for, then you could try emailing them, but it’s probably fine if you don’t email any. I know people who didn’t contact any professors at all and were admitted to top programs.

Thanks funnybounce! One reason I asked is because I emailed a lot of professors at one school (got a couple of ‘yes’ on accepting students and a handful of ‘no’s’) Now the question is do I list those “no’s” in the drop down menu if I know they’re not accepting…

And can somebody answer my other question, please? :)

On most apps there are spaces to enter your Research Interests, Faculty Interested In, and Research Experiences [bold]in addition[/bold] to the personal statement. Is it a no-no to repeat what you’ve said in your personal statement in these fields (and vice versa)? So far I’m literally repeating the same sentences. Will adcoms see through this?

Hey,

So I was checking out University of Florida’s application to the Bioscience program, and what they heck?!?! The require a picture of yourself!

I have never heard of this. Lol. What do you guys think?

I remember one of my undergrad schools asking for a picture, but not graduate. Maybe they like a face to go along with a name?

Perhaps just upload a Guy Fawkes mask? ;)

I remember it saying something like “we’ll use this picture to help us identify you during the interview.” I think that’s BS. They just want to see if you’re hot or not, LOL. That’s Florida…
