We know of three people who thought they had been admitted to Honors at Northeastern when they got their admissions letters back in March or so, only to find out when they got their housing assignments earlier this summer that they had been mistaken (because they were not assigned to IV). Did anyone else have this problem? I think there was some misleading or confusing wording in the admissions acceptance material that was originally sent.

What was written in the letter that might have caused the confusion?

Did they request honors housing?

It should be pretty clear on the admission decision if they got into honors.

when i first read my letter online in december. i thought i got into honors for a second. because on the accepted page it was like more info about financial aid and the honors program will be in the official letter. so it made it sound like i got honors and scholarships.

I think the confusion stemmed from an initial letter or email that said “Congratulations on your acceptance to Northeastern. If you have been accepted into Honors you will get three letters from admissions” or something like that. So it was easy to overlook the “if” and just see “you have been accepted into honors.” These kids all got merit awards that were called “Dean’s Scholarships” so getting into honors seemed to fit. We’ll never know because it was months between believing it and finding out the truth, but looking back at all the admissions info that seemed the most likely cause of confusion.

Yeah I think Dean’s Scholarships go to the top 25% and honors is for the top 10%.

If they had been accepted into honors, they would have had to additionally request honors housing in order to be put in IV.

I heard somewhere they are requiring IV now, since they have so many beds that they can, instead of having it as an option like when I was a freshman… Could be wrong though.

^That would totally make sense. There seemed to be extra room last year with the huge handicap dorm rooms going to non-handicapped singles and whatnot.

The problem could also be that they did get into honors but failed to submit the form online committing to the honors program.
