Congrats to Graduates and Welcome President Obama

Just want to say that as a parent of a UM student, I'm proud and pleased that President Obama is giving the commencement speech. It's an honor for the university and I hope it goes well.

Congratulations to all graduates. I hope you have a wonderful day.

I just hope that the weather holds up for all of those people. Congrats all graduates!

10:30-12 on Big Ten Network.

I really enjoyed watching the mass exodus of people from the stadium following Obama’s speech.

it was an amazing experience to be there!

I liked his speech, but I have something else to thank him for: emptying the arboretum so that I could enjoy basically the entire day with no one around. Since the entire town was concentrated around the football stadium, I thought it would be a great idea to go down by the river.

Were there protesters outside?

Did bearcats manage to get his loud speakers set up and did anyone hear him out there?

What was the crowd reaction to the speech?

Just curious.

there were anti-abortion protestors outside holding up signs of dead baby fetuses. t

…it looks like bearcats pussied out.

It was an amazing speech. I caught it on CNN and was truly jealous that I wasn’t there. Congrats to all graduates!!!

Can’t believe that I made it! Literally at the last minute. My parents woke up and looked outside and said “We’re not going to the graduation. We’ll have a nice breakfast and go back to the hotel and watch the whole thing on TV.”

After breakfast, there was still time to go to the stadium so I said that I would go by myself. I didn’t care whether they wanted to go… it was my day and I wanted to see the President of the United States. My mom eventually caved in and accompanied me while my dad gloomily drove back to the hotel by himself. He just didn’t want to go and risk the weather. But it truly stopped raining!

But yayyyy  His speech was well-done and appealed to everyone, including the graduates. It had some political undertones but it’s hard to think big when the last 20 years of your life is around politics!

dang, you guys are lucky…

Congratulations to all! My son took the chance to brave the rain and it did go away and he got to see the President. I watched the ceremony online.

I actually didn’t like the speech until the end and I am really surprised. Maybe my expectations were too high. I guess I was expecting him to talk less about him and more about the graduates.

Yea, his speech was a little too heavy on the politics, but I liked it. The rain that morning was discouraging and the Big House got lucky it didn’t get a thunderstorm. I’m nowhere near graduating, and I was lucky to get one of the last tickets made available to the Umich community.

Ironically, I was a Hillary supporter in the primaries and never had seen Obama in person. He is far more charismatic in person than I expected.

the rain in the morning really sucked though, i guess we arrived too early. We got there around 6:15AM, it started pouring the instant we got out. We were all soaked, literally, within 15 mins. But the gates didn’t open until 8 30 or so. It was all worth it though!

Speaking to graduates (especially 12,000 of them) is so generic. What exactly did you expect him to say?

I felt like his speech was directed towards the graduates. He was speaking about how the graduates can effect politics and change the nation. He also challenged the graduates to make the future government smarter and to also expand their knowledge on politics.

A few times he said read listen to viewpoints that challenge your own and don’t disregard anyone who doesn’t share the same view point as you.

What were you guys expecting? Every commencement address I have ever seen didn’t necessarily speak directly to the graduates the whole time. Even Larry Page’s speech had more to do with himself than the graduates.
