Congratz y'all, now my turn ;)

-.- at least spend some time in picking between SEAS and college it'll be difficult for you to transfer if you pick the wrong one

thx soulofheaven! Nostalgia....

um lynda, i'm sry i was unclear, i'm applying for the college.

question, if i live in west vancouver, will universities automatically think i am rich and fin. aid difficult?

Colleges don't just assume anything, they look at the stats

ali_liu:

You do realize the Ivy League colleges check with each other on their applicants, right? Before the admissions officers at the school you apply to even read your app, they check to see whether you have applied to other Ivy League schools (and some other schools, too, I think). This is mainly to make sure the RD students haven't already applied ED somewhere else, and if they have, then the RD college automatically rejects your application.

What I'm getting at here is that every Ivy League school will see that you have applied to practically all the other Ivy League schools, and they will NOT be impressed by that, since that makes it so obvious that you only want to attend the Ivies for their prestige and not because you actually have a clue as to what the Ivies can help you accomplish in terms of your intended concentration.

I think all the comments on your approach to the admission process are valid advices (although some are not well pressented) and should not be ignored.

but since you decided to apply for columbia '10 RD round, as an ED acceptee I wish you the best of luck and sincerely hope that you are applying for the right reasons.

ps. I'd prefer if you stop making reference to me. (I'd keep these comments in pm but you closed off pm box)

Fine fine, time for some "constructive" advice?
Your stats are within range for the lower Ivies at least. For the higher ones, it depends on your essays.

I'd say that you have a very good chance--almost 100%-- at the lower Ivies, but the "higher" Ivies: meh. Basically the "higher" Ivies are very selective and want usually very unique people. It depends on what you have to offer to their campus that makes you unique.

heh.. 100% at columbia college RD? I think columbia 2002 can speak more on the likelihood of that.

just a small reality check the so-called "lower ivy" --columbia College has below 10% acceptance rates. like others have said in ED chances threads, the right stats gets you on the doorsteps, not into the house.

Nah, I was implying maybe Cornell and U Penn would accept her. I actually don't believe that Columbia is a lower Ivy, geez, so defensive. But you're saying that others believe it is a lower Ivy? hmmm...

well you did say "lower ivy" on the columbia board =p

penn is known for filling half of their class with ED acceptees, cornell while (pretty much) known on this board for being the "easiest ivy to get into" is not true for our school (based on some last year grads that applied)

btw if you had posted the above msg in the penn or cornell board. i'm sure they'd get defensive about it too. espeically with all the passionate EDers still around. sorry about that but as an ED applicant, I can very confidently state that I love this school (although this may change next year).

Meh. All are excellent universities, but what I said is probably true regarding admissions. But hey selectivity does not necessarily= academic excellence. Some of the academic departments at the "higher Ivies" aren't really all that high on individual departmental rankings, while others are. In the end, it doesn't really matter.

thats actually quite a light hearted and true view point... in the end it matters very little where you go...

oh my god....you do 7 IB subjects with 5 at higher??...you must be crazy!!....what subjects do you take...I can't even see how you can do that!...I already had a hard time convincing the IB coordinator at my school to take me 4 at higher and 3 at standard

oie...ali_liu.

You have the same stats as me! I live in West Van too. I'm not new to the forum but just want to conceal my identity (like others on this thread)

I don't quite know why some people are flamin' you for posting on the ivies. Don't worry if they are jealous or sth. I wish you all the good luck. I am only gonna say this once (make sure u times it by 8) gl.

Jealous? Of what? Most are either in university or already accepted to these universities. Geez, seriously...just because people "flame" others does not mean jealousy...it's called finding people who do that annoying.
Talk about "fake ego-boost"....hehe

Are you ali-liu posting in a new name? (I mean c'mon: same stats, same location, new member...highly suspicious.) Not to mention you seem to think everyone else in this thread is the same person...

... enough with hte same person conspiracies this is riduculous. any not the purpose ot the post . we postsed because we think she is coming from the wrong start point while looking for her fit college. the seleciton process should not be "which ivy I can get into" rather " which university fits me"

I find this thread highly entertaining.

But seriously, I agree with the notion that the school you apply to shouldn't be based on the name alone. Choosing your school isn't about how likely it is that you'll get in as much as it is about finding the right school for you. Like a well-rounded education? Perhaps Columbia's Core Curriculum is best for you. Feel like creating your own curriculum? Maybe you should think about Brown University.

I might be seriously bashed for generalizing too much, but I'm sure many people will agree that the school you choose shouldn't please your parents or your peers; it should be a perfect fit for yourself.

[/every school counselor's speech about college]

well said, lynda, enough with the same person conspiracies.

Delicatess: being in the same location doesn't mean I am the same person. Also, I don't have the same stats as her.

We're here to give advice, not to bash each other. enough with this///

sorry for causing all this trouble! thx for coping w. this... plz let this thread die...I am happy to inform u that i shortened my college list, here's the final ones i am applying to:

Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, and UPenn...thanx for all the support! =)

You said in the earlier post:

So first you say you have the same stats and then you rescind? Anyway, this is unimportant but stick to one story!

El Fin.
