Congressional Interview Done!

My son completed his interviews with our congressman yesterday ( well MOC wasn't actually there :-) There were 6 panels of interviewers and each candidate met with 2 different panels plus the aide in charge of the nomination process. The threads in this forum helped him immensely - almost all the questions he was asked were in here somewhere. We searched the forum for different appropriate keywords and created a cheat sheet he could read through and mark up. Here are some of the questions he was asked -
Tell us about yourself. :-))
How do you define leadership?
Who do you look up to?
How are you preparing physically for the academy?
What are your plans if you don't get into USNA?
Tell us about the most difficult task you've done.

Can't remember any more - but most of them have been posted in other threads. So we just want to say thanks for all the great information!!
Towards the end, the interview turned more into a conversation but he was very comfortable, since just thinking about the questions and articulating his answers to himself helped him keep up his end. He felt he was well prepared even though he didn't spend tons of time. So thanks much. This whole process is not for the faint of heart.

Well done, son of Ohiomom88!! Glad all the input helped. Now keep us in the loop for the next steps! :-)

Best of luck Ohiomom88! Another task completed! And no, it is not for the faint of heart- but that is the objective. Trust me, this is NOTHING!

Our son completed his MOC interview today. It was with three military men (who advise the MOC staffer) and lasted 10 minutes. Others were in the interview for up to 20 minutes. Basic questions were asked. One surprise question was how his faith would impact his life at the academy. He seemed pleased with the interview but more that it is over.

My son completed his interview with Senator Allen's panel yesterday. Out of 291 applications for nominations 155 were for the Naval Academy. Twenty candidates were interviewed for each service academy.

The interview lasted for approximately 10 minutes because the panel was running behind schedule. The interviews were scheduled for 20 minute intervals.

The panel had detailed reports on each applicant to include which academies they had applied to, LOA's issued, medical status, etc.

Questions asked:

• What are your options if you do not get into the Naval Academy?
• What do you think makes a good leader?
• What do you think about killing someone?
• Have you had any other interviews with Members of Congress?
• Why do you want to attend the Naval Academy?
• What do you want us to remember?
• What don't you want us to remember?

Senator Warner and our Congresswoman do not conduct interviews fro service academy applicants.

Ohiomom88 "This whole process is not for the faint of heart."---you say, eh???

You'd better believe it!

And trust us moms of those who do get appointments...it doesn't get any easier, right Navy2010! :-)

Great to hear all the good nomination interview reports by the way! Keep the news coming so the rest of us can keep rooting for you all.

thats funny ohiomom88, i was at the same congressional interview, its a small world. my first panel seemed a little up tight but i was pretty nervous, my second panel on the other hand went excellent, i wasnt nervous and everything seemed to have gone great.

no, the lows are very low....but those highs...I live for those!!!

BTW....your daughter looked great out there on Saturday with those cymbols! And the thorpedo looked so good-so happy- it made my heart soar! :)

Navy2010...it's heartcross's dd that is in D&B on cymbals. My dd was at Hood College singing in the Messiah Concert with the USNA men/women's Glee Club.

I heard the senators from CA do their interview around early December. I'm starting to get worry now, b/c I've not heard anything from them at all. About what time will they contact me to schedule an interview if i'm getting one?
Also about how long before the interview for my local congressman will I be contacted?

Barbara Boxer's office says they will do interviews in January. Our congressman's (42nd Dist.) office has completed interviews and said they would give their decision the week after Christmas. I'm not sure when Sen. Feinstein's office does interviews.

My senator wrote me about a week before the interview. The other senator, about a month before.
new question:
Has anyone obtained more than one congressional nomination? I was told in my interview that the senators and reps compare results so that the highest # of competative candidates can receive a nomination. (I told them I had a Presidential so I guess I can wave bye bye to those noms)

My son has 2 (1 senator and 1 representative) plus NJROTC so it is possible. I do think they compare notes though so they can submit the most and the best concurrently.

Where I come from in California they compare notes so as to avoid multible nominations. This allows the greatest number of qualified candidates a shot at a service academy. Only one nomination is necessary and for every multiple nomination there is potentially one less slot available for a deserving candidate. This, of course, would not be a problem where there were more nominations available than qualified candidates.

Our congressman does his interviews in early December (the 9th to be exact). I know their selection is sent late December, early January at the latest. Still have to take skinny son to try and find some pants to fit him. Thank God I sew; lots of tailoring, I think, for the stork legs.

While it is possible to obtain more than one nomination to the same academy (some do), in highly competetive districts the MOC's compare notes to get as many candidates covered as possible. Hard to believe, but there are some districts out there that have a hard time some years finding 10 candidates to fill an open slate of nominations!

Just remember, all you need is one......

Do all applicants get an interview before the panel?

Every district and state are different depending upon the competitiveness/number of applicants.
