How do you deal with conjunctivitis(pink eye) or other contagious diseases in college if you live on campus?

In high school or middle school, if you have a contagious disease, you're forced to stay home but what about in college? I actually just had pink eye yesterday and I've only had it one other time in my life. Luckily it's going away on its own, but I'm wondering if there's a standard code on this.

Am I required to see the doctor and miss class? Because those days add up and I definitely wouldn't want to miss college classes that I'm paying for. But I also don't want to spread the disease to others.

Yes, go to your student health center and get it checked. If you have it, very contagious. If you think it is going away, maybe you don’t have it and it is something else. Like your mother probably said, wash your hands, carry hand sanitizer and keep your fingers out of your eyes.

I’m pretty sure it’s pink eye since I had minor symptoms (green discharge, red eyes, itchiness, hard to open eyes after sleep etc.) Isn’t eye drops just for bacterial conjunctivitis? I think I have viral conjunctivitis and if that’s the case, I feel like there isn’t much I can do about it except let it run its course. :/

As far as I know, you take care of your health issues yourself. If you need medical care go to the infirmary on campus (or wherever). If you are contagious to the point of not being allowed with anyone, they’ll keep you there.

My son had mono 3 weeks into freshmen year. Was allowed to stay in dorm with roomie. Was just told how to keep it from spreading and how long he would be contagious. (Which is long for mono.) No dr’s notes needed to miss class or return to classes. He emailed profs to let them know and all was fine.

Best thing for you to do is go see a doctor and get eye drops if you need them. Wash your towels and be careful not to put hands near face.

Staying out of the dining hall and not attending any parties while you’re contagious is generally a courteous thing to do. My dining hall has a policy of letting students take out food for sick roommates and what not, so that kids with the flu or norovirus or what have you don’t come in and get their germs all over the tongs…
